Every time there is a new Time Lord indoctrinated into Doctor Who, they are always given a trusted companion to join them on their adventures. Jodie Whittaker had Yazminne “Yaz” Khan and Daniel “Dan” Lewis are her companions for the duration of her time as The Doctor. Now, with Ncuit Gatwa taking over as the 15th Doctor, Millie Johnson of Coronation Street fame has been chosen to portray Ruby Sunday in the 14th season of the series.

Ruby Sunday will be the 15th Doctor’s companion, for the new Doctor Who era, which is being led by former showrunner Russell T. Davies. Davies has been quite busy with changing things up, and that started with casting the first ever African American doctor in Gatwa. Davies was the showrunner chosen to revive the science fiction series from 2005 to 2010. Now, he is returning to breath life once again into the franchise and is doing so in grand style.

Davies returning to the series is not to say that Jodie Whittaker’s time as The Doctor was underwhelming, but it seems that the franchise needs a boost yet again. Davies has the right kind of mind to expand on the franchise as well, as there have been rumors that the world of Doctor Who is meant to be expanded. During Davies’s initial run, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures were born, so we would expect that more of the new Gatwa-led episodes are going to aim to do the same.

There have also been rumblings that Doctor Who could find its way onto Disney+, which would be the first time that the series is being offered on a streaming platform outside of BBC. Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Johnson will then be front and center for this new rebirth of the series, which could mean that a more expanded universe is being planned. While Doctor Who always has its specials, we could be seeing a partnership with BBC and Disney+ that could bring even more spinoff shows to the platform.

Jodie Whittaker officially ended her run as the 13th Doctor to a huge revelation in the regeneration aspect of the series. Instead of the next Doctor being shown in her clothes, she essentially transformed into the 14th Doctor, who is David Tennant. Tennant was the Doctor that was cast during Davies’s initial run, and he has come back to now pass the title of the Doctor to Ncuti Gatwa for Doctor Who Season 14.

Fans will have to wait until November 2023 to see Ncuti Gatwa make his debut as the 15th Doctor, but at least we know that Millie Johnson will be appearing as one of his companions. We would imagine that Davies is going to be releasing more information about potential other companions closer to the date of the first special premiering, which will also be the 60th-anniversary celebration of the series. David Tennant’s return might not be the only surprise waiting for fans when the show returns at the end of 2023.
