Even though Gina Carano was only just fired from her role as Cara Dune on The Mandalorian, the call to fire the actress from the Disney+ series has been going on for months. Her controversial posts on social media have led many to petition Disney and Lucasfilm to get rid of the actress, even before The Mandalorian returned for its second season. Now, it seems as though Lucasfilm has been considering firing Carano for months now.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a source aware of Lucasfilm’s internal thinking said, “They have been looking for a reason to fire her for two months, and today was the final straw.” This final straw was a post Gina Carano made on Instagram, which equated being a Republican today to being Jewish during the Holocaust. The post was deleted quickly, but screenshots of the post have been circulating since. Lucasfilm announced that Carano is no longer employed by Lucasfilm, and that there are no plans for Carano to work with Lucasfilm in the future. In addition to that, Carano was also dropped by the UTA agency.

But Gina Carano’s firing has been a long time coming, with posts that mocked people who wear masks, insulting those who use gender pronouns in their Twitter bio, blocking followers who supported the Black Lives Matter movement, and suggesting voter fraud in the recent 2020 presidential election. Each of these has resulted in The Mandalorian fans asking Disney and Lucasfilm to fire the Cara Dune actress, but it wasn’t until this recent post that the company decided to get rid of the actress for all future Star Wars projects.

With Gina Carano now out of the Star Wars universe, there are also rumors that Lucasfilm was planning to unveil a new series revolving around Cara Dune as Disney’s Investor Day last December. It’s unclear what the Cara Dune series would have been, but there are theories that the show might have been the announced Rangers of the New Republic. While Disney gave details about other The Mandalorian spinoffs like The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka, Disney simply mentioned that Rangers of the New Republic was in the works, without giving any further details about the project.

What this means for the future of Cara Dune is unclear, except that Gina Carano will not be playing the character anymore. It is possible that Cara Dune could be replaced by a different actor, and that Cara Dune could still get her spinoff. It is said that Cara Dune would have become a part of some of The Mandalorian spinoffs, so Cara Dune could still be interwoven between these various series, just with someone else taking on the role. Or it is also entirely possible that we simply never see Cara Dune in the galaxy again.

After months of pleas for Gina Carano to be fired after multiple controversial posts, it’s good to know that these complaints didn’t fall on deaf ears. Even though there are now talking about boycotting Disney for their actions, others are glad that Disney and Lucasfilm actually help Carano accountable for her posts. If anything though, it makes one wonder why it took Disney and Lucasfilm so long to fire Carano in the first place.
