The Only DC Movie That Is Actually Happening After Warner Bros. Discovery Merger

With all the recent chaos at Warner Bros. Discovery, it seems there is only one DC movie that absolutely, definitely is getting made.

It’s been a rough time for fans of the DCEU. From The Flash star Ezra Miller’s constant run-ins with the law to the cancellation of Batgirl, it seems as though fans of the comic book franchise turned on-screen productions keep taking punches. Much of the shakeup can be pinned on Warner Bros.’s recent merger with Discovery – something that has made the major studio count their pennies and rethink what will bring in the dough and what should simply be left on the cutting room floor. With so many balls in the air, it seems as though (as of right now, according to Variety) there is only one DC movie that will definitely be moving forward under the merger: Joker: Folie à Deux

That’s right, if any DC movie goes into production it will definitely be this one. And, after looking at the numbers, it’s no shock as to why the followup to Todd Phillips’ 2019 dark villain origin story, Joker, is receiving a sequel. For one, the story told in Joker isn’t your run-of-the-mill comic-based story. It’s dark, upsetting, and stays true to the psychological thriller genre. Audiences were able to find themselves falling into madness right alongside Joaquin Phoenix’s take on the titular character landing the feature an 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

While the critic score on the online rating platform is a bit lower at 68%, the DC movie was overall well received by those at the top of the critical chain. The film would nab a whopping 11 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and would see its star Joaquin Phoenix leaving with the Oscar for Best Actor and composer Hildur Guðnadóttir taking home the award for Best Original Score. All in all, the film brought in a total of $1.074 billion at the global box office making it no shock as to why Warner Bros. Discovery is certain that a sequel will be on the way.

So, what do we know about Joker: Folie à Deux? As of right now, the DC movie is set to high kick into theaters on October 4, 2023, with Todd Phillips returning to direct. Phillips will once again co-write alongside his scribing partner Scott Silver who worked with the filmmaker on the first film’s screenplay. Pop megastar and celebrated actress Lady Gaga will be appearing in the film as the Joker’s love interest, Harley Quinn. Joaquin Phoenix will reprise his role as the saddest clown in the land in what is being billed as a musical production. It was also recently revealed that Zazie Beetz was in talks to return for the follow-up feature.

With Joker: Folie à Deux being a definite, it’s only a matter of time until we find out what other feature-length projects Warner Bros. Discovery plans to move forward with. Compared to their counterparts over at Marvel headquarters, DC has had a run of bad luck when it comes to their productions, something that will only get better or worse with the recent merger. While we wish we had more greenlit DC movie titles coming your way today, we can at least look to the future of Joker to know that something is in the works.
