As anticipation mounts for the casting of Henry Cavill’s replacement in Superman: Legacy, fan art featuring David Corenswet as the Last Son of Krypton has been creating a buzz on social media. The poster-style image features a brighter, more traditional Christopher Reeve-inspired suit, showcasing why the young actor is a popular choice for the coveted role.

As one of the most famous comic book characters, finding someone to effectively portray the Man of Steel on the silver screen has proven to be quite challenging for DC. Although the studio succeeded with Henry Cavill’s immensely popular rendition of Superman in the previous films, James Gunn and Peter Safran squashed his much-anticipated return to the role.

Detailing their plans for the new slate of DC movies, the pair revealed that Superman would differ from Henry Cavill’s portrayal, as they are opting for a younger version of the superhero. As Superman: Legacy aims to reboot the DC Universe, David Corenswet is rumored to be a frontrunner for the role. Other actors rumored to be up for the part include Jacob Elordi, Tom Brittney, and Andrew Richardson.

Meanwhile, David Corenswet previously expressed his interest in playing Superman. When fan chatter about his casting exploded in 2019, the actor responded, saying that he would be honored to take on the role. The Pearl actor also revealed that he would like to play a more colorful version of the character compared to Henry Cavill’s Superman.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Corenswet said, “It came to my attention before the internet got a hold of me. “But my pie-in-the-sky ambition is definitely to play Superman. I would love to see somebody do an upbeat, throwback [version of Superman]. I love the Henry Cavill dark and gritty take, but I would love to see the next one be very bright and optimistic.”

Henry Cavill in Man of Steel (2013)

Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Superman in 2013’s Man of Steel has sparked some controversy among fans and critics. While many appreciated his physical presence and commitment to the role, there were differing opinions about the creative direction of the character. The biggest critique revolved around the superhero’s darker and more brooding tone.

For some fans, this departure from Superman’s traditionally optimistic and hopeful nature conflicted with their expectations. They believed the character should embody the hope and inspiration he represents in the comics. Another point of contention was the level of destruction and collateral damage depicted in the films, particularly the killing of Zod.

The controversy surrounding Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Superman also extended to the character’s iconic suit. Some fans expressed disappointment with the darker color palette and textured design, believing that it deviated too far from the classic and brighter representation of the suit in the comics.

However, while there were several criticisms, most fans appreciated Henry Cavill’s interpretation of Superman and were bitterly disappointed when he announced his departure from the role. Meanwhile, Superman: Legacy will be released in theaters worldwide on July 11, 2025.  The story follows Clark Kent as he grapples with the juxtaposition of his Kryptonian heritage and his human upbringing in a world that views kindness as outdated.
