Knives Out was one of the surprise-hit movies of 2019, featuring an ensemble cast with a hilarious and gripping story about a murder mystery and all the twists and turns along the way. It stood to reason that director Rian Johnson and company would want to capitalize on the return from the first film and keep more going in a budding franchise. That they have. Knives Out 2 will bring back Daniel Craig and, according to Deadline, Johnson has entered into a massive deal with Netflix. Apparently, the streaming platform has worked out a deal topping $400 million dollars for the next two movies in the story.

The $400+ (it could be as much as $450) million dollar deal Netflix worked out is for Knives Out 2 and 3 meaning we have a couple of more stories coming around at least for Daniel Craig and his character Detective Benoit Blanc. It’s unclear who else would return and we could be looking at two totally new sets of mysteries on our hands. Whatever the path they choose, it’s almost sure to be excellent considering the start they got with the first film.

This streaming deal from Netflix for Knives Out 2 and 3 marks such a massive win for Rian Johnson and Daniel Craig and is one of those stories that doesn’t happen all that much in Hollywood anymore. Johnson wrote the script following his work on Star Wars: The Last Jedi and wanted to do a whodunit. Basically, Johnson made the original movie and sold it to Lionsgate following a screening at the Toronto Film Festival. The flick turned out to be a massive success, earning more than $300 million at the box office on its meager (by modern-day standards) $40 million budget. It had a lot of star power helping it with Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ana de Armas, Michael Shannon, Toni Collette, and Don Johnson (among many others) also in the cast.

Though Lionsgate announced they would be putting out a sequel to the film, what they failed to mention at the time (or maybe realize) was that they didn’t have the rights to the film. Turns out Rian Johnson and producer Ram Bergman still owned those, leaving the next set of films up for auction to the highest bidder. Netflix ended up winning that battle and we will get Daniel Craig reprising the role on the streaming platform.

Besides just being a box office success, Knives Out was also a huge winner in the critical department as well. It’s sitting at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes with critics loving what Daniel Craig and the others brought to the film. Many even suspected at the time that this wasn’t the last we would see of Detective Blanc.

Knives Out 2 is set to start filming this summer with a 2022 release date in the works. Considering the star power, critical success, money invested and Rian Johnson and Daniel Craig returning, we could see another stacked cast and cool story. This is one of those awesome Hollywood stories with a team that deserves the spoils.
