When it comes to favorite characters, Cole Hauser’s Rip Wheeler takes the cake for the most beloved member of the Yellowstone call sheet. And while fans await more information about several of the spinoffs now in the works surrounding both the original series, as well as its limited prequel 1883, Cole Hauser recently dropped the news during an interview with ET that he would be appearing in the latter’s offshoot: 1883: The Bass Reeves Story. But before you get ahead of yourself wondering how Rip Wheeler time travels, hold your horses, as it seems that Hauser will join the series in a brand new role.

While he didn’t release many details, Cole Hauser did reveal that he would be “switching it up” and joining the cast of the Yellowstone prequel’s spinoff. When pressed for further information, Hauser gave a gentlemanly “No ma’am” to the reporter, shooting our hopes of elaboration down, but in the kindest way possible. Although that isn’t anything to go off, we can presume that Hauser will either appear as a lawman or an outlaw in the Bass Reeves centered story.

Cole Hauser will join leading actor David Oyelowo in the Yellowstone spinoff, with the latter starring as the titular man of the law. The limited series will follow the life of the infamous law enforcement official who wrangled up so many wanted men that he would go on to become the inspiration for The Lone Ranger. The first Black deputy U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi River, Bass Reeves became a name to be feared for any renegade troublemaker hiding out from the government.

1883: The Bass Reeves Story is a spin-off of Taylor Sheridan’s 1883, a limited series that came out at the tail end of 2021 and chronicled the lives of the Dutton family as they made their way West. Starring Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and Sam Elliott, the series showed the hardships the family faced long before Cole Hauser’s Rip Wheeler and Kelly Reilly’s Beth Dutton would fall in love in Yellowstone. Realizing that folks can’t get enough of his Dutton centered universe, the success of 1883 no doubt fueled Sheridan’s brain power and led to him creating several other prequels and spinoffs that are now heading into production.

While audiences will soon be seeing Kevin Costner, Cole Hauser, and the rest of the Dutton clan in the approaching fifth season of Yellowstone, they can also expect to catch a Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford led prequel titled 1923 that will see the legendary family struggle through the days of the Great Depression, Prohibition, and the Western Expansion. For a more present day twist, fans will soon be transported to Texas where they’ll follow a new tale at the Four Sixes Ranch titled 6666. Finally, the rumor mill has been churning that Sheridan plans to continue his prequel stories and show what the family was up to in the decades of 1940 and 1960.

Although Cole Hauser fans were recently riled up by a teaser shared to Yellowstone’s Instagram account, it’s our guess that the actor will be sticking around the franchise for a long time to come. Gear up to catch all the action unfold when Yellowstone returns on November 13. As of right now, no release date for 1883: The Bass Reeves Story has been set.
