Really any Christopher Nolan flick is appointment viewing with the director creating some of the best movies over the last couple of decades. He will go down as one of the best to ever do it with films of all different scopes and sizes. And his next film could end up being one of his best yet. The director is compiling quite the cast for Oppenheimer in the story about the scientist who ended up creating the atomic bomb. The latest casting announcement from The Hollywood Reporter has it that The Suicide Squad star David Dastmalchian has joined the cast in an undisclosed role. The two are reunited after working together in the past.

David Daltmachian might, in some ways, owe his career to Christopher Nolan. The latter cast the then-unknown actor in 2008s The Dark Knight. Daltmachian played a small, though somewhat crucial role in the film as a criminal who worked in The Joker’s loose organization. He was a mental patient Thomas Schiff who is part of the plot to kill the mayor and Jim Gordon. The character is interrogated by Harvey Dent only to be just crazy enough to not really give any information. It was a quick role, but Daltmachian is memorable in the part.

Now, after a career that’s seen him play a number of different roles in comic book movies like Ant-Man and the Wasp as well as The Suicide Squad last summer, things are coming full circle with a role in Oppenheimer. He also had a role in last year’s Dune as the deadly Mentat of House Harkonnen, Piter De Vries. Basically, if you need a creepy guy in a movie, Daltmachian is your dude and he’s parlayed that first role in The Dark Knight into an incredibly successful career. Christopher Nolan was the first to see it.

While it’s not exactly clear what role David Daltmachian will have in this Christopher Nolan movie, he’s joining a phenomenal cast led by another Nolan movie vet Cillian Murphy. The latter will play J. Robert Oppenheimer in the movie who is credited as being part of the group labeled “father of the atomic bomb”. The real-life Oppenheimer took part in the Manhatten Project which concluded its “successful” tests in 1945 when the first bomb was detonated. The movie will apparently recreate some of the timelines around those tests and the impact they had on the world.

Others in Oppenheimer include Emily Blunt as Kitty Oppenheimer, his wife, Matt Damon as Leslie Groves, Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr., Rami Malek, Dane DeHaan, Josh Hartnett, Jack Quaid, Kenneth Branagh, and more. This is truly a who’s who in terms of A-list talent clearly drawn in on the prospect of a possible award-winning movie from Christopher Nolan. It’s easy to see why this flick would attract such a list of names.

Christopher Nolan is already underway filming Oppenheimer, with production starting back in January in New Mexico. And the movie already has a July 21, 2023 release date to look forward to. It will be the iconic director’s first film since 2020s Tenet.
