A Chris Pratt Sci-Fi Adventure Is Blowing Up On Streaming
Actor Chris Pratt has been blowing up screens big and small as of late, with hits like Jurassic World Dominion and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. The former Parks and Recreation actor has become one of the most sought after action movie stars of the past decade, and many of his films have performed well at the box office and on streaming platforms. One of Chris Pratt’s latest movies, The Tomorrow War has hit the number 10 spot of streaming films on Prime Video, according to streamer tracker FlixPatrol.
Directed by Chris McKay of The Lego Batman Movie fame, 2021’s The Tomorrow War stars Chris Pratt as former Green Beret First Sergeant James Daniel “Dan” Forester Jr., a biology teacher who is thrust into dealing with his past by fighting a war in the future. The situation worsens when fellow present-day soldiers and civilians are sent to the future because they all need to battle an alien army. The film is aided by a strong cast of actors, including The Handmaid’s Tale star Yvonne Strahovski, J. K. Simmons, Betty Gilpin, Veep actor Sam Richardson, and Keith Powers.
The initial title for The Tomorrow War was Ghost Draft and many versions of the film were developed prior to settling on the screenplay written by Zach Dean. The name of the movie was changed to The Tomorrow War sometime prior to filming. CGI was limited for many of these scenes as director Chris McKay wanted the movie to feel authentic.
The Tomorrow War boasted a high price tag prior to its release, with a budget around $200 million, making it one of the most expensive movies ever produced to go directly to a streaming platform release. Filming had concluded in January 2020 with Chris Pratt and the rest of the cast, and the movie was initially intended to have a theatrical release that December, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced the premiere to be delayed. The Tomorrow War‘s theatrical release was eventually canceled, and Amazon Studios ended up acquiring the rights to distribute the movie from Paramount Pictures, debuting on their streaming platform Prime Video on July 2, 2021.
Critics and audiences were a pretty mixed bag when it came to their reviews of The Tomorrow War, much to the dismay of Chris Pratt who had most likely hoped the movie’s original theatrical release would boost his action movie star profile even further. Rotten Tomatoes currently ranks the movie with a 52% on its Tomatometer based on 207 critics’ reviews, but with a higher Audience Score of 76% from over 5,000 ratings from verified users to the site. Similarly, Metacritic reflects a Metascore for the film of 45 and a User Score of 6.4.
