Chris Pine is no stranger to major franchises. Now, he’s negotiating a role to join a new one with a Dungeons & Dragons movie.

When you think of Dungeons & Dragons on the screen, you may be more likely to think of the kids playing the game on Stranger Things than any of the three previously released DnD movies. We’ve been fortunate to see a number of great live-action fantasy series in recent decades. Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones have proven that live-action fantasy can certainly do well. The previous DnD movies weren’t exactly great. Fans don’t exactly argue which is best. They argue which is worse. That being said, Chris Pine being cast in the new movie is a great sign.

Even people who weren’t particularly in love with some of the Star Trek movies usually admit that Chris Pine’s work as Kirk was above board. Hopefully, we’ll still seeing him in Star Trek 4, if the studio ever gets it together. He’s been part of the Wonder Woman franchise. He’s proven himself as a leading man. That will help when it comes to the success of a Dungeons & Dragons movie.

It’s been a long wait for this particular Dungeons & Dragons movie. Hasbro/eOne and Paramount are producing together and the studios were involved in a legal battle for years. Chris Pine is the first of any casting news casting for the film. Behind the scenes, they have Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley directing the movie. These two previously worked together on Game Night and Spider-Man: Homecoming. The pair have also written the latest version of the script.

While no one has yet commented on Chris Pine’s role, the Dungeons & Dragons movie team has talked some about working on the action-fantasy script during quarantine. Michael Gilio wrote an original draft that they’re working with. This seems like promising news. It means the pair of directors have a vision they want to see happen for the franchise. (Or it means they’re bored in quarantine, but that could still lead to great things.)

Back in May, the pair told SyFy that they’re consulting with people who work at Wizards of the Coast and maintaining a weekly Dungeons & Dragons game night to keep their foot in the game. In terms of turning a role-playing game into a movie, they said, “The format of Dungeons & Dragons is so interesting and fun and all about critical thinking and thinking on your feet and figuring out ways to make things work after they fall flat. There’s a lot of the spirit of that that we’re trying to inject into the movie itself.”

With a passionate pair behind the scenes, Wizards of the Coast involved, and now Chris Pine set to star in the movie, Dungeons & Dragons is off to a promising start.

Chris Pine can next be seen in Wonder Woman 1984, released to streaming on HBO Max December 25th, 2020. He is also currently working on Don’t Worry Darling, a psychological horror film directed by Olivia Wilde.

As for the Dungeons & Dragons movie, it is set to begin filming in early 2021 in Belfast. The movie is expected to be released sometime in 2022.
