It is probably a lot of responsibility to be Captain America. While Chris Evans had a solid career before beginning his portrayal of the First Avenger in 2011, he is undoubtedly best recognized for playing the most stalwart and honest man who has ever existed. It could be imagined that now that the shield has been passed to Anthony Mackie, he is ready to chill out and take some different kinds of roles. In his upcoming film The Gray Man, Evans will be playing a psychopathic killer named Lloyd Hansen leading a manhunt for the titular character (played by Ryan Gosling) and it is clear from his mustache alone that this guy is not a good guy. Check out Chris Evans in The Gray Man:

Now, it must be said that not even a mustache that hovers somewhere between “Vincent Price” and “Dick Dastardly” can make Chris Evans look like anything other than one of the best-looking men in show business. Aside from being dressed entirely in black and having the kind of slicked-back hair that has traditionally represented a villain since the heyday of the 1980s, you can also tell that Lloyd Hansen is evil by the very weird way he is holding his gun. Just look again. That is a weird way to hold a gun, even for a bad guy.

The Gray Man stars handsome leading men Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans along with an extensive cast of beautiful ringers including Ana de Armas, Regé-Jean Page, and Billy Bob Thornton.  The movie is based on a series of novels by Mark Greaney, who is also notable for taking over the Jack Ryan books after the death of original writer and collaborator Tom Clancy. The series follows former CIA agent/current freelance assassin Court Gentry in a number of adventures. In this one, he is being hunted by his former comrade in arms and attempting to rescue his former CIA handler from an international scheme. Given that there are currently 11 Gray Man books in the series (with another on the way in 2023), it is safe to imagine there are some franchise aspirations here.

After departing the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Chris Evans starred in Rian Johnson’s well-received murder mystery Knives Out, for which both he and his cable-knit sweaters were praised for going outside of their comfort zone. The Gray Man seems set to continue Evans’ journey into villainhood, while also reuniting him with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo as well as writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The latter duo wrote all three Captain America films in addition to Infinity War and Endgame. The Gray Man is set for limited release in the United States on July 15, followed by Netflix streaming release the next week. It is also Netflix’s single most expensive film production to date, with an estimated budget of $200 million. It is currently unknown how much of that budget was dedicated to Chris Evans’ mustache, but we will update with any new information on that specific subject.
