Exclusive: Chris Evans Returning To Marvel Cinematic Universe
According to our trusted and proven sources, Chris Evans has inked a new deal to return to the Marvel Universe.
Chris Evans last appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, in which he handed off the role of Captain America (symbolically) to his friend Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) as well as his shield (literally). Since then, the status of Chris Evans’ iconic character has been a bit of a Marvel mystery, with it being unclear exactly what happened to the aged version of Steve Rogers that we last saw. According to our trusted and proven sources, Chris Evans has signed a deal to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and we have a good idea of what project he is coming back for.
Beginning in 2011 with Captain America: The First Avenger, Chris Evans has been one of the linchpins of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As one of the original members of the Avengers (and part of what eventually emerged as a central power triumvirate of Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor), Chris Evans came to represent decency and genuine heroism in a complicated world. Both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War were considered highlights of Phases Two and Three of the MCU, and the character’s journey as a man out of time proved to be one of the most emotional arcs of the entire franchise. Even after Chris Evans apparently departed Marvel, the effect of his absence has been clearly seen in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and certain discussions about his, uh, personal life.
It seems likely that the return of Chris Evans to the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be officially announced at the upcoming D23 event, but we are going to call it now: Captain America will be back in Secret Wars. It was rumored for months that Marvel Studios President/mastermind Kevin Feige was building up to a massive, crossover event titled Secret Wars, and finally confirmed at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Secret Wars will undoubtedly draw elements from the influential 1984 Marvel Comics limited series of the same name. But much as Infinity War and Endgame took parts of The Thanos Quest and The Infinity Gauntlet and built a new story, Secret Wars will likely do the same.
However, the basic premise of Secret Wars is simple: a mysterious cosmic being brings a selection of the best and worst of heroes and supervillains and makes them fight. It included characters that have not yet been introduced to the MCU, like Doctor Doom and the X-men, so there is a whole lot of potential there. In the original comic book series, Captain America (Steve Rogers edition) was a primary character, which pretty much begs for the return of Chris Evans to Marvel. Combined with the MCU’s increasing emphasis on the Multiverse and its ability to bring different versions of literally every character imaginable, it feels almost certain that we will be seeing Chris Evans back to fight on the side of good in the next huge Marvel crossover event.
