According to Charlize Theron, production on The Old Guard sequel will begin in 2022. The actress shared the news with Variety, saying the script is all done and she’s excited to start filming in the first quarter of next year. As a bonus, Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli will also be returning in their respective roles as Joe and Nicky.

Based on the 2017 graphic novel of the same name by Greg Rucka and artist Leandro Fernandez, The Old Guard follows a group of near-immortal warriors whose secret is discovered in contemporary times. The group is then faced with surviving the aftermath.

Rucka adapted the first graphic novel into a script for Netflix with Charlize Theron in the lead. Gina Prince-Bythewood directed The Old Guard which premiered on Netflix in July 2020. The movie was a massive success and garnered 78 million views in its first four weeks on the streaming site.

The Old Guard movie followed the story of the oldest immortal Andromache of Scythia (played by Charlize Theron) and her covert team of mercenaries with the same powers. Just as an unexpected new member is discovered, their existence is suddenly exposed. This forces the group into a fight for their freedom while trying to keep their identity a secret.

At the time, there was no official word of a sequel but director Gina Prince-Bythewood was hopeful about the possibility. A month after its release, Greg Rucka told Discussing Film that there had been conversations about a follow-up with Charlize Theron set to return.

Rukka also said that Netflix’s Co-Chief Executive and Chief Content Officer, Ted Sarandos was exploring the idea of turning The Old Guard into a franchise. In fact, this was something executives at the streaming giant had thought about before the first film’s release.

Following Charlize Theron’s announcement about The Old Guard 2, fans can look forward to news about the plot and supporting cast. Although there’s little information about either, there’s a lot to go on for the sequel in terms of the story.

At the end of The Old Guard Charlize Theron’s protagonist, Andy no longer has her immortality or healing powers, which will raise the stakes of any future conflicts she’s involved in. Nile officially became a member of the family, so it’ll be interesting to see how much more deadly she becomes in the new movie. The final scene also revealed that Quynh managed to escape from drowning in an iron maiden. She is seen arriving at Booker’s apartment, and will probably be the story’s main villain going forward.

There is currently no release date for The Old Guard 2, but you can catch its predecessor on Netflix. Meanwhile, Charlize Theron can be seen in F9 alongside Vin Diesel and his Fast family. Interestingly, Diesel (apparently) has writers working on a Fast and Furious spinoff for Theron’s character, Cipher. Although nothing is confirmed yet, it will be an interesting direction for the Fast franchise.
