Charlize Theron is currently in the process of filming her long-awaited sequel, The Old Guard 2. The Netflix film is currently in production at Cinecittà Studios in Italy but has since been stopped because of a huge fire that erupted at the studio. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but officials are claiming that the drought and extreme heat waves that the country is experiencing have likely led to the fire happening. Europe is currently experiencing record-breaking heat waves, which have resulted in fires breaking out everywhere. Thankfully, no one was hurt at the studio.

The fire that erupted at Cinecittà Studios was likely because the studio itself is quite old. The 85-year-old studio might have some older buildings that were subjected to extreme heat and were set ablaze. This is just speculation, but it does line up with the heat waves that have been plaguing Europe this summer. Natalia Barbosa, the producer of the Charlize Theron-led sequel, has publicly stated that the shooting is now going to be pushed back by two days. Two days is not a huge amount of time considering a fire took place. There could have been much more severe damage at the studio that would have stopped things indefinitely, or at least until another studio was found to house The Old Guard 2.

Charlize Theron is set to reprise her role as Andromache of Scythia. She is joined by returning cast members, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngô, Chiwetel Ejiofor. Uma Thurman and Henry Golding are the newest stars added to the sequel. The Old Guard follows a group of mercenaries that have the power to regenerate, giving them long-lasting life, which has led to them operating for years. Theron’s character lost her powers at the end of the first film, so she enters the sequel with an unknown disadvantage against the rest of the mercenaries that still hold their powers.

The Old Guard 2 is being directed by Victoria Maroney, who famously served as the assistant director on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. She was also the first woman to have ever directed a Star Wars film. Gina Prince-Bythewood directed the first film but has since moved into a producing role. Charlize Theron was praised for her performance in the first film, which is a huge reason why the second was greenlit on Netflix. The fire that took place is now only going to minorly upset the schedule for the sequel, which is fantastic news for everyone concerned. The way that Netflix cancels shows and movies, The Old Guard 2 might have been in some trouble if the fire caused things to be shut down for an extended period.

Charlize Theron has a busy schedule ahead of her, as she is set to appear in The School For Good and Evil, which will also premiere on Netflix. She is also currently filming The Old Guard 2 and her role reprisal of Cipher in Fast X. She then moves to another sequel reprisal as Lorraine Broughton in Atomic Blonde 2. Thankfully, no one was hurt in the fire at Cinecittà Studios, and work on The Old Guard 2 was only marginally disrupted.
