Captain Marvel Is Trending Because Of A Terrifying New Scene With Scarlet Witch

This looks huge!

Captain Marvel is trending on Twitter, but not because of a Captain Marvel movie. In fact, we’re not even sure if Brie Larson has anything to do with it. Marvel released a new featurette for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and most fans seem to think it finally confirms one fan theory and debunks another. In particular, fans believe the featurette confirms a version of Captain Marvel will battle Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) in the film.

The featurette was posted Monday. Just a little shy of two minutes long, it not only shows new footage here and there, but also features snippets of interviews with Olsen, Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, and director Sam Raimi. Amongst the new footage are new shots of a battle between Wanda and a flying figure glowing with energy. Parts of this scene were featured in the first trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but no one could decide who it was. At the time fans were split between Wanda’s combatant either being a variant of Captain Marvel or Tom Cruise as Superior Iron Man. You can watch the new featurette below, with different parts of the battle sprinkled throughout the video.

Most of the fans seem to agree — whoever that is fighting Wanda, it ain’t Superior Iron Man, played by Tom Cruise or anyone else. Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean that neither Cruise nor a variant Iron Man is in the movie, but the screen grabs clearly show Captain Marvel is a much more likely possibility in this scene. That said, we don’t know which version of Captain Marvel it might be. It could be Brie Larson, it could be — as many are speculating — a variant from a timeline in which Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) became Captain Marvel. You can see examples of the fan reactions below.

Beyond just identifying the flying figure as Captain Marvel, a lot of fans are going nuts over the power being displayed in the fight. The fact that Wanda is able to seemingly survive an assault by the cosmic hero’s photo blasts is impressing the hell out of Marvelites. You can see those reactions below.

Honestly, even before today’s featurette, at least one fan had already delivered pretty convincing proof that it had to be a Captain Marvel variant she’s fighting in the scene. Back when the debate first broke out in February, one fan took careful screenshots of the trailer, showing that one shot showed Wanda — dressed in the same clothes she’s wearing in the battle scene with the glowing combatant — is splattered with blue blood. Captain Marvel, because of her Kree heritage, has blue blood. Unless the MCU Superior Iron Man is part Smurf for some reason, he would not have blue blood. You can see that tweet below.

Again, none of this comes close to proving the rumored Tom Cruise appearance as Superior Iron Man won’t happen. If anything, it only proves that it isn’t Superior Iron Man in this particular scene. And at the end of the day — considering the lengths Marvel has gone to in the past to protect reveals including altering trailers — it doesn’t even prove that. All we know for sure is that it looks like someone is really going to regret messing with Wanda.
