Marvel stars have traditionally been pretty tight-lipped about guest appearances. Patrick Stewart gave a hilarious example recently when, in response to the rumors about appearing as Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the actor said, “Who’s Doctor Strange?” Now, at least one actor is being a little bit more vocal, and he may or may not confirm our scoop about his casting from a year ago. Bruce Campbell of Evil Dead fame recently made a very interesting non-confirming confirmation that he is in Doctor Strange 2, but actually might not be in Doctor Strange 2.

Confused? Well, at a USO event that was recorded and posted on Reddit this weekend, a fan asked Bruce Campbell if he knew about a theory that he was secretly playing Mysterio in all three Sam Raimi Spider-Man films. For those who don’t know, Campbell often collaborates with Raimi — who is directing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness — and the actor had cameos as different characters in all three of the Tobey Maguire-led Spidey flicks. Campbell responded, “yeah, that’s a good one.” He continued with comments about how he likes stoking rumors, and started talking about how he “may or may not have been in Doctor Strange 2.” You can watch the video below.

Without technically confirming that he worked on Doctor Strange 2, Bruce Campbell pretty much confirms that he worked on Doctor Strange 2. He says when the word dropped that his old friend Sam Raimi was directing the film, Campbell “did not pressure him for a part,” but that the director eventually “realized he shouldn’t do it” without him. The problem, Campbell says, is that the movie has gone through a lot of changes since he “may or may not have” shot his role, so he still doesn’t know whether or not he will be in the movie.

The entire video is worth watching for any Marvel fans, and for more than the question of whether or not Bruce Campbell will appear in the upcoming flick. The actor implies that the reason the changes to Doctor Strange 2 took place has to do with planned spin-off projects. After saying that “whole storylines” are being removed from Marvel movies as they’re being made, he implies this is because “they’re making 700 of these Marvel movies.”

What Bruce Campbell says about the changes matches up with word that have come out about the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness reshoots. The changes to the film were reportedly extensive and heavily influenced by both Loki and Spider-Man: No Way Home, both of which have a lot to do with the Marvel’s expanding Multiverse. Based on Campbell’s words and earlier reports, it seems reasonable to speculate that the rumored inclusion of the Illuminati — including, perhaps, Patrick Stewart’s Professor X and Wesley Snipes’ Blade — was one of the subjects of the reshoots.

We’ll know for sure whether or not Bruce Campbell made it into Doctor Strange 2 — and, if so, who he’s playing — on May 6 when the film hits theaters. We’ll also find out about Wesley Snipes and Patrick Stewart. Then of course there’s Hayley Atwell, Tom Cruise, Chris Evans, and Leonardo DiCaprio. And by May it will likely be theorized that we’ll be seeing Lou Ferrigno’s Hulk, the 1986 version of Howard the Duck, Luke Skywalker, and most of the Care Bears in the flick.
