Brie Larson Captain Marvel

Brie Larson sure knows how to kick a hornet’s nest. Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans hardly need any kind of encouragement to start producing theories about future films or TV series. A stray shadow or a label on a can of food that appears for half a second in a trailer can lead to half-hour long YouTube videos concluding that the real villain is, of course, Mephisto. Proving she’s not afraid to throw fuel on the fire, Larson posted a series of images to social media while daring Marvelites to jump to conclusions.

All three photos were posted to Brie Larson’s official Instagram account on Monday, and all three photos are similar with tiny differences. The images show Larson with her The Marvels co-star Zawe Ashton, whose villainous role has yet to be unveiled. Both stars are wearing black shirts with writing on them. Ashton’s shirt says “Joy Division” while Larson’s reads “Villain Lovers Club.” You can see the photos below.

What do the pictures mean? Well, one theory that is already becoming popular according to The Direct is that the images are hinting at a relationship between Brie Larson’s and Ashton’s characters; possibly a romantic relationship. If this is the case, then it may very well be that the reason Captain Marvel and Ashton’s villain become enemies is their love for one another.

How’s that? Well, Ashton’s shirt in most likelihood refers to the influential late ’70s English rock band Joy Division. Their most popular song remains the 1980 single “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” released a month after the suicide of the band’s vocalist Ian Curtis. So, if Brie Larson’s shirt makes her a “villain lover” and Captain Marvel and Ashton’s character are destined to come to blows, then apparently it will be love that tears them apart.

Of course, that’s only one theory and there are sure to be dozens more on the way. MCU fans are sure to take Brie Larson’s advice and pick apart Joy Division’s entire discography as well as the photos. Maybe their shirts are just distractions. Why is Larson holding that necklace away from her in every shot? Is it just to make sure you can see the shirt or is there another reason? Why is she looking so lovingly at Ashton in the second photo while Ashton is looking at us? Who’s that guy with the bald spot in the doorway behind Ashton? Is that Mephisto? That could totally be Mephisto. Etc.

It could be that Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers and Ashton’s character had a relationship before the events of The Marvels. After all, as of right now we know very little of what Carol Danvers was doing between the events of Captain Marvel and those of Avengers: Endgame. While the films were released only months apart, over two decades pass in between the stories. We don’t know who Captain Marvel met or what dramas unfolded in her life in that time. We’ll have a better idea on February 17, 2023 when The Marvels hits theaters.
