Brad Pitt and Sandra Bullock wanted to make a romantic comedy about getting divorced, but it died on the vine.
Everyone needs a friend, and in a place like Hollywood, a friend can be more crucial than anywhere else when navigating the cut-throat mentality that is in the movie business. Some people who have been high-profile besties in Tinsletown are Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, Julieanne Hough and Nina Dobrev, and who can forget Snoop Dogg and Martha Stweart? But another friendship has burst onto the screen this year with Brad Pitt and Sandra Bullock, and according to Variety, the two almost came together to make a comedy about divorce, and what else… QVC.
Brad Pitt and Sandra Bullock are tailor-made for each other to create a romantic comedy, with Pitt embracing his more comedic side in the previous decade and Bullock being one of the Hollywood darlings along with the likes of Cameron Diaz, Julia Roberts, and Meg Ryan. However, even though they never appeared together before this year, Pitt revealed in an interview with Vogue magazine celebrating the launch of his genderless skincare line that he and Bullock were in talks to play rival QVC salespeople going through a divorce.
Brad Pitt went on to dote on Sandra Bullock and say that she is like an angel to him, that he can always count on her to drop whatever it is she is doing to do him a favor. He then described the movie they were planning as two of the top QVC salespeople bringing their relationship turmoil to the sales floor and making their private divorce public. The two of them know and understand how a nasty divorce can go as they share that experience, Pitt having divorced Angelina Jolie in a particularly messy saga, and Bullock divorced West Coast Choppers founder Jesse James amid cheating scandals.
The pair also share other things in common as well. They both own their own production companies; Brad Pitt owns Plan B Productions, which produced World War Z, Moonlight, and The Big Short. Sandra Bullock owns Fortis Films which she founded in the mid-90s, and produced many of her films like Two Weeks Notice, Miss Congeniality, Practical Magic, and The Unforgivable.
Their friendship became more mainstream this year as they appeared in cameos for each other’s big summer hits, The Lost City and Bullet Train. The Lost City saw Sandra Bullock as an introverted adventure writer getting kidnapped by an eccentric millionaire (Daniel Radcliff) and a rescue attempt by her simple-minded cover model, Alan (Channing Tatum). Brad Pitt appears as a real-life hero kicking off the rescue attempt and making Alan feel insecure from the get-go.
Bullet Train saw Brad Pitt as an assassin suffering an attack of conscience boarding a Bullet Train in Japan to retrieve a briefcase full of money. The other passengers on the train aren’t innocent people but are littered with other assassins (Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Hiroyuki Sanada). Sandra Bullock’s appearance was primarily as a phone voice giving Pitt instructions until she surprises the audience following the film’s climax.
Looking back, it is almost a tragedy that these two Hollywood superstars never got together for a romantic comedy. While QVC may seem weird and ridiculous to build a movie around, Brad Pitt and Sandra Bullock are on the short list of actors who could make it interesting. Their personal experiences with the subject matter would have brought realism to the characters that possibly could have made the film something special.
