See Jack Black as Claptrap in the Borderlands movie.
The upcoming Borderlands movie just finished its production phase, now that the cast and the crew are done with principal photography. To commemorate the event, both Gearbox and Lionsgate released the first clear look of one of the film’s characters – the franchise’s mouthy robot named Claptrap, portrayed by the legendary Jack Black.
Although the fandom’s already acquainted with the crew and cast, we got our first official look at the cast when actress Jamie Lee Curtis shared a silhouette photo of Cate Blanchett’s Lilith and much of the cast’s other characters. And while those images were the characters’ silhouettes, the studio decided to release a high-res photo of Jack Black’s character, a CL4P-TP general-purpose steward, or how his friends like to call him – Claptrap. The image was posted by the @BorderlandsMovie Twitter handle, announcing that the production of the Borderlands movie has officially wrapped.
For comparison, here is how Claptrap looks in the games:
Claptrap, or CL4P-TP, is a general-purpose robot programmed with an overenthusiastic personality, which frequently brags, but displays severe loneliness and cowardice. He’s featured in an entire Borderlands franchise, though unlike his film version, he’s voiced by different actors, David Eddings and Jim Foronda. The film version of Claptrap will likely display similar personality traits, with actor Jack Black behind Claptrap’s voicebox. Black has plenty of experience in voice acting, having lent his vocals to various mediums before, including cartoon and animated films and even video games. It will be fun to see Claptrap’s overenthusiastic personality paired with an actor with Black’s sensibility.
Black joined Blanchett, whom he previously worked with, and the rest of the crew less than six months ago, promising to bring a level of joy and silliness to Borderlands. Black and Blanchett have previously teamed up with the Borderlands’ director Eli Roth when they worked on the film The House With a Clock in Its Walls, displaying great chemistry that will hopefully translate to the Borderlands movie. Besides Black and Blanchett, the list of acting talent involved in the upcoming film is all but short.
As we have previously seen from the set photos, Jack Black and Cate Blanchett are in the company of Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, Kevin Hart as Roland, Jamie Lee Curtis as Dr. Tannis, and Gina Gershon as Mad Moxxi. Unfortunately, we’re still waiting for clear, high-resolution images of other cast members’ characters, but at least we got the first unobscured look at everyone’s beloved sassy-wheel robot, Claptrap.
The development of the Borderlands movie was announced back in 2015, but pre-production took until this year when the project entered its production phase. With principal photography now wrapped up, Borderlands is entering post-production for picture and sound editing, meaning that it won’t be long before we see it on big/small screens. Still, the exact release date remains unknown at the time of this writing, but the movie is expected to release sometime in 2022, leaving plenty of time for the studio to tease the fandom and release more clear-shots of the cast and characters.
