Almost nine years ago Patton Oswalt made a guest appearance on Parks and Recreation as Garth Blunden. With a passion for history, the character was also a big Star Wars fan and used his knowledge of the movies to filibuster a town-hall meeting during the show’s fifth season. Completely improvised, his speech is one of the show’s most famous moments. It may have been a little prophetic too because the first episode of The Book of Boba Fett features a scene that almost exactly matches what Oswalt describes.

In his prediction, Oswalt’s character said that Boba Fett would return by emerging from the sand and climbing his way out of the Sarlaac Pit onto the sands of Tatooine. “We pan down from the twin suns of Tatooine. We are now close on the mouth of the Sarlacc Pit,” he explains. “After a beat, the gloved Mandalorian armor gauntlet of Boba Fett grabs onto the sand outside the Sarlacc Pit, and the feared bounty hunter pulls himself from the maw of the sand beast.”

Created by Lights, Camera, Pod, a side-by-side clip of Oswalt’s speech paired with the opening scene from The Book of Boba Fett shows just how accurate the iconic speech was. The clip does contain spoilers so if you haven’t watched the first episode yet, you might want to skip it.

Over time the scene (which now appears in The Book of Boba Fett) has become so famous that a woman from Livingston County, Michigan, recited a portion of Patton Oswalt’s filibuster during her own meeting with the County Board of Commissioners. According to Deseret News, she delivered the speech in 2019 to make a point about the board’s decision to stop publicly broadcasting their meetings.

Created by Jon Favreau, The Book of Boba Fett serves as a spin-off from The Mandalorian and is part of the Star Wars franchise. The series takes place across two timelines – alongside The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, and immediately after the events of Return of the Jedi. The story follows Boba Fett and Fennec Shand as they attempt to make a name for themselves in the galaxy’s underworld by taking over the territory once controlled by Jabba the Hutt.

The Book of Boba Fett stars Temuera Morrison as the titular character and Ming-Na Wen as Fennec Shand. Both actors reprise their roles from The Mandalorian and other Star Wars media. Morrison appeared as Fett alongside Wen in the second season of the popular Disney+ series.

The Book of Boba Fett also features performances by David Pasquesi, Jennifer Beals, and Matt Berry as the voice of 8D8. Director Robert Rodriguez voices Dokk Strassi, while Stephen Oyoung physically portrays Dokk Strassi. And Sophie Thatcher has been cast in an undisclosed role.

Interestingly, Lucasfilm made several attempts at developing a standalone Star Wars film centered on Boba Fett. But once the company began prioritizing its streaming series, The Book of Boba Fett was officially announced. Filming began in 2020 and was completed in June 2021. The first episode of the Disney+ series premiered on December 29th.

The Book of Boba Fett will run for seven episodes until February 9, 2022. So far the series has received positive reviews from critics who praised the visuals and performances.
