Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was released back in November of 2022, and there were plenty of questions about who was going to take the mantle of the Black Panther, now that Chadwick Boseman had passed on. While everyone guessed and argued about who it was going to be, the trailers for the movie revealed the secret all along, based on a rule that director Ryan Coogler has now revealed. According to Coogler, “It’s funny, ’cause, in these films, we don’t really let anybody wear black except for the Black Panther… It’s kind of like Wakandan rules in many ways.”

What Ryan Coogler is alluding to is that Shuri was the only one in the trailer that was wearing black, and her emergence as the Black Panther was given to the world all along via the rule he established. Coogler added, “Watching the trailers come out and people saying, ‘Who’s gonna be the Black Panther?’ And that image of Shuri walking in in all black with the necklace was always in those trailers.

The Black Panther rule is something that the world is likely to now catch on to, but we certainly did not catch that at all when watching the movie. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is currently streaming on Disney+, and is once again doing great numbers, much like it did when it had been released in theaters. We are certainly going to go back and watch the movie to see how many times Shuri shows up in black.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever follows the fallout of Wakanda, which is mourning the death of its king, T’Challa. The world begins to see a much more brazen ruler, as Ramonda takes over as ruler of the hidden world. However, when the Wakandans find out that more vibranium is discovered, an ancient race of blue-skinned people emerges to align itself with Wakanda to keep the precious metal from falling into the wrong hands.

However, the leader of the blue people is Namor, a mutant with immense power. Namor is far more brutal than anyone could have guessed, and he sets off a war between the Wakandans and his people. Now, Wakandan people must decide what to do about bringing in a new Black Panther, though the previously mentioned rule had already revealed that Shuri was the logical choice all along.

The Black Panther rule is quite inventive, in that it was there all along, but nobody seemed to notice between the first and second movies that only the Black Panther wore black clothing. There are certain things that directors reveal to provide foreshadowing, though they are not always picked up so easily. As stated before, we certainly did not pick up on the black clothing aspect, but it’s a detail we are going to go back and look out for.

There are certainly more reasons to watch Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, other than looking out for the rule that Ryan Coogler has now revealed to the world. The sequel is quite heartfelt and did a great job of ushering in the new era of Black Panther, while beautifully paying tribute to Chadwick Boseman. We highly recommend giving this Marvel entry a watch, especially if you did not get a chance to see it in theaters, it is available to stream right now on Disney+.
