BioShock has joined the growing list of video game adaptations that filmmakers are targeting. These new live-action properties have begun to gather plenty of popularity after the success of both Sonic the Hedgehog movies and the newest Uncharted adaptation. Announcing a new BioShock movie isn’t the only exciting part about the film, as it has been reported that Francis Lawrence has been tapped to direct the Netflix film, with Michael Greene adapting the script. That is some huge talent, as Lawrence is famous for directing many of The Hunger Games films, and the soon-to-be prequel film.

Reports are that Lawrence is going to be handling directing duties for The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and once he is finished with that, he can jump right into the pre-production stages for BioShock. While The Hunger Games prequel is filming, Michael Green will be handling the script duties. Green famously wrote Logan, Blade Runner 2049, and Jungle Cruise. Both men should create a highly successful adaptation, and their resumes speak for themselves. We were quite skeptical until we saw the names attached to this adaptation.

BioShock has been one of the most beloved gaming franchises since the first game was released back in 2007. Together with Bioshock 2 and BioShock Infinite, the franchise has sold over 39 million copies collectively with the original releases, re-releases, and remastered bundles. The science fiction first-person shooter gained plenty of notoriety when every other game had been focused solely on multiplayer, BioShock chose to focus more on action that revolved around a spectacular narrative.

BioShock follows a man named Jack, who crash lands in the ocean. He swims to a lighthouse where he discovers the city of Rapture. This underground city was made by Andrew Ryan in the 1940s, who was obsessed with creating a utopia for the elite. However, a new compound called ADAM is discovered, which is taken from a species of sea slugs at the bottom of the ocean. This new compound leads to the citizens of rapture using it to alter their DNA. Naturally, chaos ensues, and Ryan makes this underground city cut itself off from the rest of society. Jack is made a prisoner of Rapture when he runs into the Little Sisters, who are possessed by the sea slugs. They are heavily guarded by large sea-like figures called Big Daddies, armed with power drills. Jack has the option to drain the Little Sisters of their ADAM, or spare them and remove the slug, allowing them to once again be children again. As you can see, the story is going to be quite wild and should make for a rather interesting film plot.

Filming for The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is ongoing, and the film has a November 17th, 2023, release date. That means that Francis Lawrence is going to be busy for the foreseeable future, but we could be seeing this new BioShock adaptation sometime in late 2024 or early 2025. The hope would be sooner rather than later, but we can be patient to see what kind of plot will be pulled from this wild science fiction video game.
