Betty White may be gone, but is certainly not forgotten. And her upcoming commemorative TV special has added another celebrity to its ranks. Pop superstar Cher will be lending her voice to the special airing on 31st of January on NBC, Deadline reports. Cher will be lending her world-renowned vocals to the Golden Girls theme “Thank You For Being A Friend,” as part of Celebrating Betty White: America’s Golden Girl. In anticipation of Cher’s contribution to the hour-long celebration of Betty White, the 75-year-old singer uploaded a sneak preview of the performance to her social media.

You can see the sneak preview in the video below:

The special comes in the wake of Betty White’s tragic death, just over two weeks before her hundredth birthday. The special itself will feature countless celebrities and people of great renown. A report in People Magazine lists at length the stars set to feature. These include President Joe Biden, Drew Barrymore, Valerie Bertinelli, Bryan Cranston, Ted Danson, Ellen DeGeneres, Jimmy Fallon, Tina Fey, Ana Gasteyer, Goldie Hawn, Vicki Lawrence, Jane Leeves, Jay Leno, Anthony Mackie, Wendie Malick, Joel McHale, Tracy Morgan, Jean Smart, Mary Steenburgen, the list goes on and on. There are countless more names set to take part in what NBC describes as “clips that best capture White’s irreverent tone, spirit and impeccable comedic timing that are a hallmark of her decades-long career.”

It should come as no surprise that Cher is not alone in celebrating the late, great icon that is Betty White. The actress was most famously known for her role in the sitcom The Golden Girls. Her career spanned several decades, with her comic brilliance and generosity of heart touching multiple generations of fans, including Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds, who joined the long list of celebrities to share emotional tributes to the late star following her passing.

Cher’s own relationship with Betty White can be traced back to the former’s childhood. Like many, Cher took to Twitter on New Year’s Eve to put into words just what White meant to her. You can see Cher’s Twitter post below.

Betty White featured on The Sonny and Cher Show numerous times in a variety of acting and dancing skits. One popular skit, as recalled by nikiswift.com, shows the pair dueting, with White teaching Cher how to perfect her southern accent. The pair clearly go way back and Cher’s contribution to the upcoming special is most definitely apt in this regard. And what truer words can be spoken (or sung) than “thank you for being a friend”?

Fans will be able to see Cher perform as part of Celebrating Betty White: America’s Golden Girl, a Brad Lachman Production airing on the 31st of January at 10pm ET/PT on NBC, and a day later via the streaming service Peacock. The special goes out on what would have been White’s hundredth birthday. If the special is not enough Betty White content, there is plenty more for fans to get their teeth sunk into. Popular streaming site Hulu has included Betty White’s The Golden Girls spinoff The Golden Palace as part of its content offering. In addition, a feature-length documentary Betty White: A Celebration was released in theatres on January 17th.
