Troll 2, one of the top 10 best worst movies to watch (because it’s just so bad that it’s good), is available for free on Tubi. The 1990 “horror” movie is more likely to make you laugh than cry out in fear, thanks to the ridiculous plot, terrible special effects, and cringe-worthy acting. This film fits right in with other cult classics we’ve come to know and love, like The Room, Sharknado, and Batman & Robin.

The 95-minute PG-13 fantasy movie follows the Waits family, who takes a vacation to a small town called Nilgob, but their plans go awry when they discover the whole town is actually full of goblins disguised as humans. In retrospect, they shouldn’t have been too surprised since Nilgob is just goblin spelled backward… weren’t the 90s such a clever time?

The Waits family must fight for their lives as the goblins descend on them, trying to eat their human flesh. Thankfully, the youngest Waits (Joshua) is able to communicate with his dead grandfather to help save the family and defeat the evil goblins. Spoiler alert: it involves a huge bologna sandwich.

Before there was Troll 2, there was Troll, a 1986 fantasy horror film that also qualifies as one the best worst movies of all time. The plot of this film, which actually has nothing to do with Troll 2, is similar to a Lord of the Rings movie if it took place inside a San Francisco apartment complex and if it replaced all the clever hobbits with weird, evil goblins. It’s worth a watch just to see a very young and giggly Julia Louis-Dreyfus, several years before she landed her role as Elaine on the classic TV sitcom Seinfeld.

The idea for Troll 2 was cooked up by Italian husband and wife writing team Rossella Drudi and Claudio Fragasso (who then directed the movie) after they watched a few of their friends become vegetarians at the same time. The two hardly spoke any English, which explains why the dialogue was so bad. The lead actors, who only showed up expecting to be extras, offered to ad-lib their lines to help the conversations sound more natural, but Claudio Fragasso demanded they stick to the script.

Michael Paul Stephenson, who played the character of Joshua Waits in Troll 2, went on to direct the documentary Best Worst Movie in 2009. The film takes a deep dive into the making of Troll 2, bringing in some of its cast, like George Hardy, Connie Young, and Jason Steadman, to reflect on the production and how it rose to become such a successfully beloved cult classic.

Despite its terrible ratings of 2.9 out of 10 on IMDb and a 5 percent rating from Rotten Tomatoes, fans absolutely love Troll 2. In 2007, fans gathered where the film was shot (Morgan, Utah) to host a festival honoring the ridiculous film. The Mayor of Morgan even gave Claudio Fragasso a key to the city for his contribution to the film and for helping to bring tourism to their city.
