Benedict Cumberbatch

The small screen saw Benedict Cumberbatch in the role of Sherlock Holmes in a TV show titled Sherlock, which amassed a huge fan base for Benedict’s performance. According to IMDb ratings, the show rates number one on the “All Sherlock Holmes Movies and Series” list, which only attests to Cumberbatch’s iconic performance. Now Benedict Cumberbatch is talking about returning to the role, possibly in a Sherlock movie.

The show premiered on the BBC in 2010 before reaching international fame on Netflix. It ran for four seasons and one spin-off, ending in the show’s very last episode, named “The Final Problem.” That aired in January 2017, ending Benedict Cumberbatch’s groundbreaking acting performance and his role as the iconic sleuth.

Still, fans of the series are left with a delicious aftertaste and an appetite for more Sherlock, with Benedict Cumberbatch resuming the role of the ingenious and charming protagonist. But will it ever happen? Will fans ever witness a Season 5 of Sherlock?

In one of his recent interviews regarding the upcoming spy thriller The Courier, interviewers asked Benedict Cumberbatch about the possible continuation of the series, on which he gave an answer that left Sherlock-loving audiences with a little hope:

“I’m the worst person to ask on this because I never say never, obviously. But I don’t know. And I’m the worst person to ask because my slate’s pretty, pretty full at the moment, as is Martin’s [Freeman, Watson] and all the other key players involved.”

However, while his answer leans towards “probably not,” given how busy the cast is with their respective projects, Benedict Cumberbatch did say the following:

“Maybe one day, if the script’s right. And I say ‘the script,’ maybe it could be a film rather than the series. Who knows? But anyway, not for now.”

This imagination-tickling answer left many fans of the series questioning, or even wanting a Sherlock feature film, with Benedict Cumberbatch resuming his role as Sherlock Holmes.

Martin Freeman as Watson in Sherlock

Martin Freeman, the actor that portrayed Benedict Cumberbatch’s sidekick Watson, offered his thoughts on season five, stating that it would have to be something really, really special, which disperses most of the hope, leaving fans with nothing but glimmers.

With all of that said, a glimmer can turn into a blaze, and as the fan base grows so too will the demand for more Sherlock. Maybe one day, when the right script captivates Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, and the rest of the cast, and some movie studio fronts up the money, perhaps then we’ll see more of Sherlock.

Until that happens, re-runs and binge-watching are the thing to do, “A Study in Pink” and “The Final Problem” is definitely worth watching a second time for Benedict Cumberbatch’s performance.

In literature, Sherlock Holmes is known as the world’s best and most eccentric detective. Nothing escapes his imaginative nature and deductive capabilities. The character’s eccentric nature, charm, wit, and intellect were well-captured and portrayed by actors like Robert Downey Jr, Jonny Lee Miller, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ian McKellen, Jeremy Brett, and many others.

Admittedly, Robert Downey Jr. brought an exceptional performance in the Sherlock Holmes feature films, as the roles of eccentric personalities seem to fit him well, be it an eccentric detective or a playboy billionaire (Tony Stark). But for a lot of fans Benedict Cumberbatch is the true Sherlock Holmes.
