Ben Affleck and Jared Leto only got to face-off for a brief moment in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. Otherwise, these two iterations of the classic foes never got the chance to really square off against one another. Well, if a new rumor is to be believed, these two might finally get the opportunity to really match wits and fists.

We Got This Covered is reporting that HBO Max is considering a new DC series that would be centered around Ben Affleck as Batman and Jared Leto as the Joker. As always, you should take this rumor as just that. There is no official confirmation that this project is currently in development or that either of the two stars has been approached for such a project.

However, we’re here and we might as well talk about the possibility of Ben Affleck and Jared Leto getting their own HBO Max series as Batman and the Joker. If there is any truth to this rumor, it likely has to do with HBO Max’s anticipation at what the response to Zack Snyder’s Justice League will be. If they are assuming it will go over well, they are likely thinking about how to further continue those iterations of those DC characters. We’ve heard similar rumors regarding Henry Cavill’s Superman.

If these iterations of these two particular DC characters do continue, HBO Max might be the best platform for them. Ben Affleck and Jared Leto likely aren’t compelling enough draws to anchor an entire DC feature film at this point, and it sure seems like the cinematic DC universe is moving towards a new Batman. Giving them a series that allowed them to play out storylines that might have been in the works for feature films seems a good compromise. And hardcore fans will go wherever there’s new Batman/Joker material.

It would be nice to see Ben Affleck and Jared Leto actually share some worthwhile screen time as Batman and the Joker. The two never got to share dialogue during their brief appearance together in Suicide Squad. Maybe there is a compelling story and dynamic there to explore. However, Leto’s version of the Clown Prince of Crime has been controversial, to say the least. Would viewers be interested in sticking around with him for an entire series?

Again, if there is even an iota of truth to this rumor, it could very well just be one of many ideas that are being thrown around regarding the future of the DC universe. Ben Affleck is reportedly suiting up for reshoots on Zack Snyder’s Justice League. It’s likely that some conversations are bound to pop while these kinds of projects are underway. Whether or not anything of substance will come of them is another matter entirely.

We will have to wait and see if HBO Max is willing to roll the dice on a series that features Ben Affleck as Batman and Jared Leto as the Joker. If they do, you can bet we will be seeing even more jokes about the Joker’s tattoos. Bring ’em on.
