Battlestar Galactica fans will be extremely pleased with the newest episode of The Mandalorian, the hit Star Wars series available on the streaming platform Disney+. A new Mandalorian character – well, an old Mandalorian character but we’ll get into that – appears in the show’s eleventh episode and the actress that plays her will immediately be recognized by fans of the 2004 sci-fi series.
Katee Sackhoff, best known as Starbuck in Battlestar Galactica, showed up in “The Heiress” as Bo-Katan Kryze, the heir apparent to the throne of Mandalore. The character of Kryze first appeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the animated series that has proven to be one of the most popular facets of the prequel era of the franchise. She became an important character in Star Wars lore, offering one of the best looks we’ve gotten at Mandalorian culture and history. This is the first time we have ever seen her brought to life in live-action.
And choosing someone like Katee Sackhoff to play Kryze is a bold declaration about the character’s importance moving forward. Battlestar Galactica knew that Sackhoff could anchor a show, and it looks like the character of Kryze will be important moving forward. We know that Ahsoka Tano will be appearing in the next episode, and she is another character who rose to prominence thanks to her role in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. It certainly looks like The Mandalorian is going to be drawing upon that show’s canon for a lot of its story moving forward.
Adding to that assumption is the fact that the Battlestar Galactica actress sees her character motivated by a quest for the Darksaber. This is an artifact and weapon that was also introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The Darksaber was created by the first Mandalorian to ever been inducted into the Jedi Order. As such, it acts as a symbol of leadership among Mandalorian culture. We have seen that Moff Gideon wields the Darksaber in the first season finale of The Mandalorian. It looks like he and Kryze are going to end up engaged in battle.
In fact, we know that Battlestar Galactica‘s Katee Sackhoff won’t be the only one to cross paths with Moff Gideon. We know he will be having a fierce duel in this season of The Mandalorian, but reports have led us to believe that this fight will take place with Ahsoka Tano. It sounds like these characters are going to become crucial members of The Mandalorian moving forward. Our only worry is that it could end up overshadowing the simpler story that has been taking place with Din Djarin and the Child.
Regardless, it is undeniably awesome to see Battlestar Galactica‘s Katee Sackhoff become an official member of the Star Wars universe. She looks awesome and brings her trademark badassness to the character of Kryze, and we look forward to seeing her pop up again in the show. Will it be later this season or will we have to wait until Season 3? We will simply have to wait and see. Is it next Friday yet?
