On the heels of our announcement that Rachel Zegler would be taking the lead role in The Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Lionsgate decided to surprise the world with a teaser trailer for the new film. Although we are not gifted with any of the characters that will be in the film, the trailer is still epic. There is a ton of ice that starts to melt away, which is symbolic in that it has been some time since a Hunger Games film has come out. You can see the trailer below:

The captions that have been added to the trailer warn about which tributes will be Songbirds and which will be Snakes. The ending of the trailer does see the unfrozen snake go right for the bird. The exciting nature of this trailer is the added welcoming back to The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes was also given a release date of November 17, 2023. While waiting basically a year and a half for a movie isn’t the most fun thing in the world, we can all be happy to know that the franchise is moving on.

As previously mentioned, Rachel Zegler is set to take on the role of the female lead for the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes prequel film. Though it has not been established who she is going to portray, there is a strong possibility that she will be Lucy Gray. Gray is the female lead in the prequel books, so it stands to reason that is who Zegler is going to be playing in the new franchise film. Gray is the tribute from the 12th district, the same as Katniss Everdeen, who was portrayed by Jennifer Lawrence in the first slate of films in the franchise.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes does go back to the past a bit, as the prequel book covers the 10th Hunger Games. Lucy Gray is the tribute from the same district as Everdeen. However, there are familiar characters that will make their debut in the form of their younger selves. A young Coriolanus Snow is in a much different situation, as he is not the President of Panem, but essentially a gifted orphan. He is chosen to mentor a tribute and is paired with Lucy Gray. They use one another to essentially attempt to survive the games. Based on the title of the prequel film and the relationship that someone of higher stature has with a tribute, we can imagine that most of the prequel film will cover treachery.

There have been no further casting announcements other than Zegler presumably locking up the role of Gray. That has not quite been confirmed yet, though the actress teased her involvement on her Twitter. Zegler is currently enjoying quite a career, as she has garnered some huge roles. From Maria in West Side Story to Snow White in the live-action adaptation, she is not slowing down for anyone.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is set to hit theaters in November of 2023. Be on the lookout for casting announcements in the coming months. Also, for Rachel Zegler to finally confirm that she has been cast in this prequel.
