Baby Groot became an internet sensation when he debuted at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy, and he became even more inescapable when he starred in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. After realizing just how profitable baby versions of their characters can be, it looks like Disney wants to give the little tree alien his own series on Disney+.

I Am Groot will be a new series on Disney plus that will see Baby Groot go on a number of adventures in a series of shorts. It is unclear if James Gunn will be directly involved in I Am Groot like he will be for The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Marvel Studios made the announcement on their Twitter account shortly after it was announced during the Disney Investor Day.

You have to imagine that I Am Groot was partially conceived of after Marvel/Disney saw just how popular Baby Yoda was in The Mandalorian. Granted, Baby Groot was already a big merchandise mover and this series might have been in the works shortly after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was such a success. The fac that it will also be a series of shorts leads us to believe that I Am Groot is probably going to be a much more slight and comedic riff on the Marvel Cinematic Universe than a lot of the other projects that were announced.

If nothing else, it would be great to see Baby Groot rubbing shoulders with some of the strangest members of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We have seen characters like Howard the Duck and Cosmo the Spacedog make their way into the Guardians of the Galaxy films. Having little Groot meet up with these kinds of characters would provide a real treat to Marvel fans who want to see some of the weirder and wilder characters from the comics get a little bit more of the spotlight.

It will also be interesting to see if any of the events in I Am Groot ends up playing a crucial role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Since this is Baby Groot, it’s assumed the show will only take place either before, during, or slightly after the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 since Groot had grown into a moody teenager by the time we saw him in Avengers: Infinity War. Will the shorts in I Am Groot be mostly just comedic flavor and a way to re-interject Baby Groot into the merchandising marketplace?

We hope we will hear more specifics about I Am Groot in the near future. The Guardians are some of the most lovable characters in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe and any excuse to spend some time with them is fine by us. If it means manufacturing a Disney+ series to get Baby Groot toys back on the shelves, we won’t complain too much. And if it means we get to see more of Howard the Duck, the series is already a slam dunk winner in our book.
