The Marvel Cinematic Universe has become a burgeoning franchise with an ever-growing timeline organized by phases. With Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania marking the beginning of Phase Five, many fans are interested to see how this new phase will play out, but one person who doesn’t seem too concerned may come as a surprise. According to recent stories in Gizmodo and SlashFilm, writer Jeff Loveness, responsible for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and the upcoming Avengers 5 could care less about the distinctions between Marvel’s phases.

In an interview with Gizmodo, Loveness said of Marvel’s Phases: “You want to propel them into the next phase, which this is the beginning of. We’ve got a plan and it’s going to be very exciting with Avengers.” But he also noted that it was more important to “just make a fun movie.” He continued this pushback against thinking too heavily about the phases in an interview with SlashFilm, in which he stated, “I could care less about what phase we’re in. It’s more about just making this fun family adventure comedy with a great villain.”

Marvel’s most recent release was the Jeff Loveness-written Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which marked the beginning of Phase Five of the MCU. Phase Five is scheduled to include at least 12 new entries, including film and television, that will debut in 2023 and 2024. Currently, Phase Five consists of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Marvels, Captain America: New World Order, Thunderbolts, Blade, Deadpool 3, and the television series Secret Invasion, Loki Season Two, Ironheart, Echo, Agatha: Coven of Chaos, and Daredevil: Born Again.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania may be hugely important to our understanding of what will take place in Avengers 5. (SPOILERS AHEAD) The film saw Kang the Conqueror attempting to recruit Scott Lang to help in his conquest of the universe in order to secure more time with his family. Although this variant of Kang is supposedly dead, the introduction of the Council of Kangs cements that Kang will remain an impending force within the MCU, one that will play a major role in various films but most certainly Avengers 5.

Both Avengers 5, also known as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, and Avengers: Secret Wars will take place during Phase Six, which will begin in 2025. The only other property as yet confirmed for Phase Six is the hotly anticipated Fantastic Four, although Marvel is sure to announce more entries as the phase gets closer. Avengers: The Kang Dynasty will debut on the big screen on May 2, 2025.

Fans know that after the events of Quantumania, the MCU is shaping up for a large-scale battle between Kang’s multiple variants and the universe’s heroes in Avengers 5. The film gets its name from the “Kang Dynasty” storyline that took place through Avengers (vol. 3) #41-55 and the Avengers Annual 2001 and featured Kang the Conqueror conquering the planet.

Although the film will likely vary from the storyline of the comics, it will be interesting to see what aspects of the arc will remain intact and which will be changed. Although the Phases concept has been helpful to fans in tracking what films occurred when in the large timeline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it doesn’t seem to be much of a consideration from the Avengers 5 writer’s point of view. Hopefully, this means a stronger focus on the quality of the stories being told and not on making sure that everything fits neatly into a narrative box.
