Hot on the heels of his global box office takeover with Avatar: The Way of Water, filmmaker James Cameron isn’t wasting any time getting the wheels rolling on what will be the third and fourth installments in his franchise. The creative team is already showing us what they have in store for Avatar 3 via a Twitter account that recently revealed a set of images that show how Cameron plans to form new eye-dazzling worlds. Delving further into Pandora, the pictures cover major mileage, introducing us to extreme weather differences.

The first image of Avatar 3 unveils a piece of the story that audiences have been waiting patiently to feast their eyes on. A volcano blows plumes of smoke into the sky where the sun is all but masked by thick clouds of ash. For long-time fans and followers, this may be the most intriguing of all the conceptual designs as it teases the arrival of the famed “ash people,” mentioned in the previous films.

Giving us more of that dry, hot environment, the next image stays in the desert but this time reveals blue skies with a ground of sand as far as the eye can see. Similar to the previous volcanic image, this Avatar 3 look also features rigid rocks, with some even floating in the air, similar to what we saw in the franchise’s first film. Proving that water can create life even in the most barren landscapes, we can see little pieces of green plants jutting out from the rocky terrain.

Finally, the desert turns to ice in the final Avatar 3 teaser image as we travel to another extreme that features blustery scenery. Snow dots a mountain with jagged peaks and in the middle, we spot what appears to be two Na’vi trekking across the deep drifts. All in all, these conceptual designs are a great first look into what Disney and Cameron have in store for audiences in the continuation of the popular franchise.

First landing in 2009, James Cameron’s creative and experimental film Avatar quickly built a dedicated following. Unfortunately, it would be over ten years before audiences got the next installment in the story, but it certainly didn’t disappoint, with theatergoers flocking to their local cinemas to take in the next part of the epic story. While things were up in the air before its arrival, Avatar: The Way of Water (Avatar 2) immediately allowed Cameron to move forward with Avatar 3, Avatar 4, and Avatar 5, allowing the filmmaker to fully round out his tale.

The second feature saw a continuation of the original story with Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Ney’tiri (Zoe Saldaña) protecting their family at any cost as they’re forced to leave their home and find a new place to live. With threats coming from both humans and elsewhere, there’s danger lurking around every turn. While we can’t be sure where Avatar 3 will take us, we can certainly expect to see an even broader landscape of Pandora than ever before.

Reintroducing us to Sam Worthington’s Jake Sully and Zoe Saldaña’s Ney’tiri, Avatar: The Way of Water also brought in a slew of new and familiar franchise faces, including Kate Winslet, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, and Jemaine Clement. While a full cast list for Avatar 3 hasn’t been revealed at this time, we can expect to see many of the same names attached to the title, with even more star power expected for the final two movies.

Lucky for audiences who braved the over decade-long wait between the first and second movie, Avatar 3 is expected to drop in late 2024.
