For the Super Bowl, Mike Myers and Dana Carvey revived their Wayne’s World characters, Wayne and Garth. With the commercial receiving a ton of attention online, it looks to have boosted rumors of Myers reviving more of his classic characters, as there is now a new rumor that there could be an Austin Powers 4 in the works.

The rumor comes from We Got This Covered, who say that Austin Powers 4 is currently in early development. While there hasn’t been a new Austin Powers movie since 2002’s Austin Powers in Goldmember, there have been plenty of rumors about a fourth film pretty much since the last film came out 18 years ago.

Ever since his last starring role in 2008’s The Love Guru, Mike Myers has mostly stuck to minor cameos in films. Since The Love Guru, the actor has only appeared in 2009’s Inglourious Basterds, 2018’s Terminal, and Bohemian Rhapsody. But beyond voicing Shrek over the years, Myers has stayed relatively quiet over the last decade or so. Myers did appear as Dr. Evil on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon back in 2018, which also prompted rumors of another film, but nothing ever came of that rumor either.

There has been plenty of speculation over the years whether or not Austin Powers 4 could be in the works, with director Jay Roach saying that he and Mike Myers have been trying to come up with an idea for a long time. After the death of Mini-Me actor Verne Troyer, Roach said, “To be honest, I don’t know how we’d do it without Verne.” Roach also says that he and Myers believed there was plenty more material with the character of Dr. Evil, yet Roach says, “but it’s always up to Mike.”

Even last year, there were new rumors about Austin Powers 4, which were promptly shut down by Seth Green, who played Dr. Evil’s son, Scott. Green said of the rumors, “No, there’s no truth to it,” and continued to say it had been about six or seven years since he last heard anything about a fourth film. It is possible that Roach and Myers have been hashing out ideas before telling the rest of the cast, but if there was any likelihood that the film was indeed on the way, it seems like Green would be one of the first cast members to hear about it.

As of right now, it seems as though there aren’t any concrete plans for Austin Powers 4 and that Myers is simply content to do occasional cameos of some of his favorite characters and appear in large ensemble films. Just last month, Myers signed on to the next film from Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle director David O. Russell. While not much is known about the film so far, the cast is already massive, featuring Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington, Rami Malek, Zoe Saldana, Robert De Niro, Timothy Olyphant, Michael Shannon, Chris Rock, and Anya Taylor-Joy, amongst others. But after the failure of The Love Guru, maybe Myers is happy just being a cog in larger stories?
