Aubrey Plaza Recounts Horrific Health Scare At Young Age
Aubrey Plaza recently opened up about a health scare after suffering an unexplained stroke at age 20. The Parks and Recreation star discussed the baffling event on a recent episode of the Howard Stern Show on Sirius XM, recalling that the terrifying health event left her without the ability to speak.
Forgot How To Talk
Aubrey Plaza’s health scare occurred while she was attending New York University. According to the actress, she had just ridden the subway to a friend’s home in Astoria and felt her body undergo paralysis. After relaying to Stern how she briefly lost her motor skills, she continued by stating that she forgot how to talk.
The Telltale Signs
She went to a nearby hospital for treatment where a doctor determined that she suffered a stroke. The telltale moment was when her physician asked her to place her right hand on her left knee, and she was stricken with the horrifying reality that she was unable to do so. “I was confused about right and left,” Aubrey Plaza said about the health scare. This made it more apparent that the health episode she experienced at her friend’s home was indeed a stroke.
Not Her Last Stroke
That incident nearly 20 years ago wasn’t the last time that Aubrey Plaza has suffered from similar health issues. In an interview in 2007 with National Public Radio, the actress revealed that she has suffered from several transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), a type of mini stroke.
Strokes come in two different varieties. A hemorrhagic stroke is when blood vessels in the brain burst and causes the vital fluid to halt its flow in part of the brain. The ischemic stroke that Aubrey Plaza suffered is a different one altogether. This occurs when something blocks or minimizes the supply of blood to the brain, creating potentially serious health issues.
Aubrey Plaza In Megalopolis
Aubrey Plaza appeared on Howard Stern’s satellite radio show to help promote her new film, Megalopolis when she and the long-time shock jock’s conversation pivoted toward her various health issues. The Francis Ford Coppola-directed film is set to debut in theaters on September 27.
Parks And Rec Made Plaza A Star
Aubrey Plaza appeared in a handful of short films and had a guest star role on the hit NBC comedy series 30 Rock before landing her breakthrough role as April Ludgate in the award-winning series Parks and Rec. Known for her trademark deadpan humor, Plaza has made a career from sitcom appearances alone, guest starring in everything from Drunk History to Criminal Minds to Crank Yankers.
No Signs Of Slowing Down
Aubrey Plaza’s health scare 20 years ago didn’t seem to slow her down, as she has added a multitude of voice acting credits to her growing resume as well, lending her talents to Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, The Simpsons, and Castle, among others.
Aubrey Plaza has also notched more than two dozen film roles since she first broke through on Parks and Rec. The actress has co-starred in hit comedy films Dirty Grandpa, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, and Spin Me Round, as well as a starring role in the 2019 remake of Child’s Play.
Next up, the actress will star in Marvel’s Agata All Along, premiering on Disney+ on September 18.
