Aubrey Plaza hasn’t been a regular cast member on a TV series since the conclusion of Fox’s Legion in 2019, which wasn’t always the best show for laughs. But now Plaza’s returning to TV in a big way, and it will be (probably) a long way from Pawnee, Indiana. Plaza will be the series lead for season 2 of HBO’s dark comedy series The White Lotus.

Deadline reports that Aubrey Plaza will be playing Harper Spiller, who is on vacation with her husband and a group of friends. However, the new season will move the resort out of Hawaii to a new location that hasn’t been revealed yet. The only other cast member to be confirmed for the new season is Michael Imperioli, best known as the impulsive Christopher Moltisanti on HBO’s mob epic The Sopranos. Variety reports that Imperioli plays Dominic Di Grasso, who travels to the eponymous resort with his son and father. There are rumors that Jennifer Coolidge (A Mighty Wind) — who appeared in season 1 as the wealthy, grieving Tanya McQuoid — will reprise her role for season 2.

While we don’t know yet exactly where Aubrey Plaza and the rest of the season 2 cast will be going, Mike White — who created, directs, and writes the series — dropped a hint that it could take the story outside the United States. In August 2021, White told Entertainment Weekly that while he hoped the new setting helps to keep things fresh, the choice was made for more practical reasons. The first season filmed at the Four Seasons, which White said the production couldn’t afford this time around. Since The White Lotus was established as an international chain of resorts in the first season, White said season 2 would be set at “The White Lotus: Kyoto or something.”

The series Aubrey Plaza is joining earned a good deal of critical acclaim on its first outing. Season 1 holds an impressive 89% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, with many reviewers comparing it to a gutsier and more probing version of the classic fantasy drama Fantasy Island. Coolidge and costar Murray Bartlett (Farscape) were singled out for stellar performances. It proved to be one of the top series streamed on HBO Max. According to Deadline, 1.9 million viewers tuned in for the season 1 finale of The White Lotus, which was a 59% increased from the previous week, and 3.5 times more viewers than the season premiere.

There’s no release date just yet for season 2 of The White Lotus, but if you’re desperate for new Aubrey Plaza content, don’t worry. She’ll be starring as a snarky assistant to a spy in Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre, premiering March 18. She’ll be joined by Jason Statham as the titular spy, Cary Elwes as his employer, Nicholas Hoult as an oblivious movie star, and Hugh Grant as the wealthy villain. Plaza’s also starring in and producing Emily the Criminal, due for release this year.
