See Arnold Schwarzenegger And Salma Hayek As Powerful Greek Gods

After several weeks of cryptic hints, the promised Super Bowl BMW commercial starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Salma Hayek has arrived. Although the Big Game is still a few days away, the heavily hyped ads are now as much of a tradition as the Halftime Show and the Puppy Bowl, and appear on the Internet before a down has been taken. In this particular commercial, Schwarzenegger appears as an impressively bearded, armored Zeus and Hayek as Hera in a variety of classically inspired gowns. While the previous teasers for the ad have only used crackling electricity (and uh, a macchiato) to hint at the actual content, it is now clear that it is for the BMW electric car, the BMW iX.

In the beginning of the ad Arnold Schwarzenegger as Zeus and Salma Hayek as Hera appear on an airborne dias in Olympus, the fabled and very cloud-filled home of the Greek Gods. Zeus dramatically informs the assembled other deities that “the dark skies have spoken” and that their king and queen will be leaving their home forever. After a flabbergasted question from a less-famous Poseidon, God of the Seas, they reveal that they are relocating to Palm Springs, California.

From there, there are a lot of scenes of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Zeus trying to chill and being distracted by other retirees as they ask him to charge various devices with his divine electrical powers. That all seems to really bum him out, even with the companionship of Hera and an adorable and miniature version of Pegasus, the fabled winged horse. Then Hera arrives to show off the electric BMX iX, they drive off happily and Zeus uses his powers to change a red traffic light to green, which seems dangerous even for gods.

The BMW advertisement was initially teased as a possible new Hollywood project for Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has significantly slowed down his film work in recent years. Aside from appearing in two tepidly received Terminator films, the legendary action star, bodybuilder and chief executive of the state of California has only appeared in a handful of projects in the last five years. Part of that is likely due to the troubled nature of his personal life since the revelation he had fathered a child out of wedlock and the ensuing divorce from longtime spouse Maria Shriver.

Reportedly, Arnold Schwarzenegger will be starring with frequent co-star Danny DeVito in a decades later sequel to their 1988 comedy hit Twins, in which the two played the titular twins despite their height disparity. Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock actor Tracy Morgan is joining the two as a long lost extra sibling. As you might expect, the film will be called Triplets

For her part, Salma Hayek has been much busier of late. While this is her first project with Arnold Schwarzenegger, she starred in 2021’s MCU film Eternals and in Ridley Scott’s drama House of Gucci with Lady Gaga and Adam Driver. There is currently no word whether BMW hopes to make the advertisement the cornerstone of an automobile-based cinematic universe.
