Aquaman 2 has been kicking around for a couple of years now with rumors almost constantly swirling about not only the direction of the movie, but the cast as well. There’s almost no doubt the film will actually get made, but how it all goes down still has plenty of speculation around it. The latest rumor, this time from insider Daniel Richtman, is that the sequel will focus a lot more on girl power in its script.

Details around this more feminist approach to Aquaman 2 are scarce at this point besides maybe just some general marching orders about the proposed focus for the sequel. It doesn’t necessarily mean a total shift in how the movie will focus on characters. But rather, this news could imply some general thematic aspects they want the writers to lean into when it comes to the approach. No doubt any studio, especially ones developing comic book characters, want to make sure they are making sure to appeal to a wide audience.

If the Aquaman 2 girl power theme was accurate then the obvious starting point would revolving things more around Amber Heard’s Mera character. She was Arthur Curry’s love interest in the original film but had plenty of action sequences of her own. Unfortunately, it’s not even clear Heard will be in the sequel considering she’s been at the center of plenty of negative press following her high profile divorce from Johnny Depp.

And there have been other rumors lately of possible additions to the Aquaman 2 or even wholesale replacements. Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) was thought to maybe come on in some fashion either as a new character or a replacement for Heard. And then there were fans clamoring for Emilia Clarke to join the production as well.

The original Aquaman was a massive hit for Warner Bros. in the DC Universe. On about a $160 million budget, the film took home almost $1.15 billion at the box office. Of course, in this new movie day and age, those kind of box office returns aren’t realistic considering the state of actual movie theaters. But there’s still plenty of upside for an Aquaman 2 to hit with audiences especially if it’s going for a wider appeal.

Before we get an Aquaman 2 sequel, Jason Momoa is set to reprise his role as Arthur Curry in the much-anticipated  Zack Snyder’s Justice League which will hit HBO Max in March of this year. That will include a new story from the original with the director having more influence around his initial vision. Considering Aquaman’s involvement in the initial fighting, he’ll be called on to help battle Darkseid with the rest of the crew.

As it stands, there are only really rumors around Aquaman 2 though the studio has tentatively set a release date of December 16, 2022. But that was under the assumption that pre-production would really ramp up last year. We could end up seeing a delay before it’s all said and done. But when it does hit the screen, it looks like the females will be at the center of the action.
