For the fans of the Netflix series The Witcher, who continue to wait patiently for the premiere of season 2, recent news that the series has once again started up production is wonderful news. Now fans can truly get excited as photos and videos have leaked, giving us a look at Anya Chalotra’s Yennefer in a new costume, as well as her character alongside Freya Allan’s Ciri.
Here is your first look with Anya Chalotra either looking at something on her phone or taking a selfie.
As you can see Anya Chalotra’s new Witcher season 2 outfit isa black dress with some fancy stitching. It’s also less revealing than what she wore in season 1, as pictured below…
These pics come courtesy of JustJared, who also grabbed quite a few more, these showing Anya Chalotra and Allan together as well as various behind-the-scenes shots. The pictures also show Chalotra and Allan’s stunt doubles in action.
The pictures hint at Anya Chalotra’s Yennefer and Ciri coming together, possibly with Yennefer teaching Ciri the finer points of her powers. If you look closely at one of the pictures, you can see blood tears flowing from Alan’s stunt double. Perhaps the training isn’t going as Ciri had hoped.
Netflix also released this look at Chalotra’s character, as she’ll appear in the new season…
The anticipation of season 2 is high for fans of The Witcher. The series looks to take viewers on a different journey than in season 1 as the stories will be more linear than the first season, which saw the story bounce from past to present to past to present, sometimes allowing for a bit of confusion.
While the overall season was highly successful (and made a star out of Anya Chalotra), series showrunner Lauren Hissrich felt the three different timelines were necessary to bring Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri together. She told The Wrap, “Obviously, it was one of the most controversial parts of Season 1 and I didn’t expect it to be as controversial as it was. But it’s something I still stand behind, in terms of storytelling,” Hissrich said, adding that the “goal was to get to know each of these characters individually, and the only want to do that was to separate their timelines.”
But now things have come together, and the storytelling can be more familiar. According to Hissrich, “What’s great though is they have intersected now. So what we’ll see in Season 2 is that all of our characters are existing on the same timeline. What that allows us to do storywise though is to play with time in slightly different ways. We get to do flashbacks, we get to do flash-forwards, we get to actually integrate time in a completely different way that we weren’t able to do in Season 1. Because, if you can imagine, if we were in three different timelines (in Season 1) and then flashed forward or flashed back, we would have been in four or five or six timelines — even I know that’s too much. So I think it will be a lot easier for the audience follow and understand, especially a new audience coming in. But there are still going to be some fun challenges with time.”
With storytelling veering back toward the norm, what does that mean for Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri? From the pictures of Anya Chalotra alone, we can assume that Yennefer’s relationship toward Ciri may take on more of a teacher role, guiding Ciri in everything and anything as it pertains to sorcery. Hissrich, as well as the rest of the cast, has been fairly tight-lipped on where we expect characters to begin their season 2 adventures, and how close they plan on following author Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels is still a mystery.
Fans of the novels and the series can relish the fact that there will be plenty more monsters, sex, and action in season 2 as well as new characters coming on board. The series does not have a premiere date, but with production back in action, speculation is for a summer 2021 premiere. Of course, this all hinges on that COVID issue and whether there are any production shutdowns in the near future.
