Antonio Banderas’ most dashing action movie is streaming for free, and, no, it’s not Zorro. Puss in Boots, the “true story” of our favorite animated cat with a sword and stylish Corinthian leather boots from the Shrek universe, is currently streaming on Freevee. The release of this Dreamworks classic on the streaming service comes just in time for audiences to refresh their memories of Puss in Boots’ adventures before watching the sequel, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which comes to theaters starting December 21, 2022.

Antonio Banderas has starred in many classic action movies. In addition to The Mask of Zorro (1998), The 13th Warrior (1999) and Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003) cemented Banderas as the action hero actor that he is so well-known to be. But none of his films have impacted multiple generations of viewers the way that his character from the Shrek franchise has.

The swashbuckling British shorthair cat, Puss in Boots, originated in Shrek 2 (2004) and quickly became an ally to the self-hating ogre, and hence became a recurring character and even got his own movie in 2011. Antonio Banderas voices the romantic and wide-eyed titular character.

Puss in Boots takes place long before our favorite orange cat met Shrek and follows Puss’s adventures with his friend and hustling partner, Humpty Dumpty, and a new comrade they meet, the cat burglar, Kitty Softpaws. Together, the three of them must outwit Jack and Jill, two murderous outlaws played by Billy Bob Thornton and Amy Sedaris, who are in possession of magical beans. Zach Galifianakis and Salma Hayek join Antonio Banderas as Humpty and Kitty in this adventure worthy of nine lifetimes.

The Shrek series was based on the children’s book by William Steig, and the first film was written by Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio, who passed the reins on to Andrew Adamson and Joe Stillman, who wrote Shrek 2, which introduced Antonio Banderas’ character, Puss in Boots. Tom Wheeler wrote the screenplay for Puss In Boots, as well as the story for the sequel, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish.

Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek return for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The sequel takes place long after Puss in Boots’ origin story and even after the events of Shrek Forever After, the fourth Shrek film (2010). In The Last Wish, Puss has discovered that his many thrilling adventures have taken eight of his nine lives, so he sets off to find the mythical last wish, which he hopes will restore his lives to a total of nine.

With Antonio Banderas returning to voice the sword-wielding cat, fans have wondered if he would ever reprise another dashing, daring, and romantic character—Zorro. While there are currently no plans for Banderas to put on the black mask for a third film, the actor has said he would be willing to do so under one condition. Banderas would like to pass the mantle of Zorro off to another actor in the same way that Anthony Hopkins did for him. If Banderas were to have his way, the next actor to portray Zorro would be Marvel’s Spiderman, Tom Holland.
