With all the news about new Lord of the Rings movies from Warner Bros. Discovery being on the horizon, fans have one big question: will we be seeing Andy Serkis reprise his role as the skin-crawlingly creepy Gollum? As reported by MovieWeb, the Batman actor would be up for it.

“I think that there are so many other potential Middle-Earth projects which could come about … and if they’re doing them, I would, of course, jump at the chance to have that relationship rekindled … Middle-Earth has never left me.”

Andy Serkis

Andy Serkis can thank the original Lord of the Rings trilogy of films for much of what he has accomplished in his career. He came to fame by playing the character of Gollum with revolutionary-at-the-time motion capture technology and eventually became the film industry’s go-to guy when it came to motion capture roles.

While Andy Serkis has now branched out and become a well-known and well-regarded actor and director using his own image instead of one generated by a computer, the Lord of the Rings franchise still holds a special place in his heart. Since he filmed the first movies, he has since become a staple in J.R.R. Tolkien’s world, becoming the narrator of numerous works written by the author and linguist.

So, naturally, Andy Serkis would be up for playing another role in a film based on those works, especially if Peter Jackson, Philippa Boyens, and Fran Walsh are involved. He says that they are like a “second family” to him and that he finds them to be “incredible people to work with.”

But before you start imagining Andy Serkis putting on the motion capture suit and hissing about his “precious” again, you should know that it is not very likely that he would be playing the part of Gollum this time. It isn’t clear yet what the plot of the new movies will be, but Serkis most likely wouldn’t want to play the same part that he played before either way. So, if he shows up in the movies, it will likely be as a totally different character.

Lord of the Rings

It is hard to say how fans will take this news, however. While they might be excited to hear that Andy Serkis would gladly return to another Lord of the Rings project, fans have been very ambivalent about whether there should even be another Lord of the Rings project in the first place. The first three movies were cinematic masterpieces, and other films like The Hobbit were great as well.

Many people don’t see a need to keep redoing the same storyline, especially because these films are considered so good that they can’t be improved upon.

Plus, there is the whole drama about Prime Video’s Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power that received tons of hate from the Lord of the Rings fanbase. Well, everyone except for Andy Serkis. Apparently, after having read The Lord of the Rings books so many times and being familiar with the content of their sprawling appendices, he was better able to see the connections between the plot of this new series and the work it was based on.

“Once you get through understanding the rules of it, and actually how loyal to the trilogy and the feel of the trilogy music by Howard Shore for the opening sequence, et cetera,” he said, “I found it incredibly engaging, and I really, really enjoyed watching it.”

So, maybe that’s the real news in this article… You heard it here first: there is one person who liked Amazon’s Rings of Power series. And it is none other than Gollum himself! Andy Serkis likes The Lord of the Rings so much that he has accepted even that series as canon. Now that’s dedication!
