Fans of The Walking Dead have been wondering where we’ll find Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes in the upcoming untitled The Walking Dead spinoff and now we have our first hint. According to showrunner Scott Gimple, it’s going to be a new location that hasn’t yet been seen in the Walking Dead universe, teasing that Rick has “discovered a new world.” That’s not a lot to go off of, but it does rule out a few locations.

So, if it’s not somewhere that we’ve seen before, this The Walking Dead spinoff has quite a few places it could go. However, this means we definitely won’t be returning to Rick Grimes’ familiar home of Atlanta, Georgia. This also rules out the post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, Mexico, and Texas that we see in Fear the Walking Dead.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond is in Nebraska, so it won’t take place there either. There are also other upcoming spin-offs to consider. The Walking Dead: Dead City with Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan takes place in Manhattan and the Daryl spin-off that stars Norman Reedus is set in Europe, so we can probably rule out those locations as well.

We can go even further and look at the last time we saw Rick Grimes. In Season 9, Rick was in Virginia when a CRM helicopter took him to the Civic Republic, which is in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, Michonne set off to find Rick after finding evidence of his survival in the 10th season.

While Rick was taken to the Civic Republic in Philadelphia, it doesn’t seem like The Walking Dead spinoff will take place there, since we did see the city in The Walking Dead: World Beyond. When Michonne set out to find Rick, she did find a logbook with the locations Flordia, Virginia, and New Jersey listed. During the AMC Networks Summit, The Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang mentioned that Michonne was headed north and was somewhere between Virginia and New Jersey.

Does this mean the Rick Grime and Michonne The Walking Dead spinoff could be taking place in New Jersey? Various New Jersey local news sources reported that The Walking Dead was shooting in their state this summer, but for the Maggie and Negan spin-off. With the bulk of that series taking place in New York, it could be possible that we’ll see Rick and Michonne in Jersey.

Placing both of these The Walking Dead spin-offs in such close proximity would certainly make shooting them easier, and from a story standpoint, it makes it possible that these characters might run into each other. At this point, it’s too early to tell if New Jersey is where we’ll find Rick Grimes and Michonne, but it isn’t the worst guess. You never know, the showrunners could be trying to throw us off altogether and it could be somewhere no one has considered yet.

Regardless of where The Walking Dead spinoff ends up taking place, fans will surely tune in to find out what happens to their favorite characters. The untitled spin-off is set to premiere sometime in 2023. Stay tuned for more news on this and the other spin-offs in The Walking Dead franchise.
