This last weekend was a big one for Spider-Man news, as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man: No Way Home steamrolled the box office and received early but glowing praise from both critics and audiences, according to Rotten Tomatoes. With the new movie only just released, new rumors are already starting to pop up about what will happen next in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In particular, The Direct and insider Daniel Richtman are reporting that Andrew Garfield is interested in reprising the role, either in cameos or as a co-starring part.

The rest of this article will include spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home. Now that audiences know for sure that past and future Spider-Men Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield both show up in the current Spider-Man Tom Holland’s third film under the webmask, new reports are coming in on their future. The rumor stems from film industry scooper Daniel Richtman. He started off with a simple declaration. It soon grew from there.

Soon after Richtman said this, another insider chimed in, and The Direct is reporting that Andrew Garfield may actually be looking to return for multiple Spider-Man projects. Moreover, they report that this would be under the Marvel-Sony banner, just like all of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man films so far.

Given that Andrew Garfield has previously described the role as a “childhood dream” (per The Independent), it doesn’t seem like it would take a lot to get him to come back. After all, Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness is already reshooting to include more cameos and Spider-Man-related characters (per Inside the Magic). Would it be that much of a stretch for an actor newly back on a hot streak to get back to fulfilling his childhood dream role? We’ll just have to wait and see.

The audiences who flocked to theaters in vast numbers to see No Way Home are already aware Andrew Garfield is the second Spider-Man to show up in the film. After Tom Holland’s Peter Parker asks for Dr. Stephen Strange’s help in erasing public memory of his secret identity and then accidentally interferes with the fabric of reality, multiverse ripples lead to a number of familiar faces on screen. Fan-favorite villains the Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Dr. Octopus (Alfred Molina), and Sandman (Thomas Hayden Church) both arrive from Sam Raimi’s trilogy of films, while Electro (Jamie Foxx) and Lizard (Rhys Ifans) are transplanted from the reality of Marc Webb’s films. And while the film seemed to definitively wrap up those storylines (and killed off Marisa Tomei’s Aunt May), both the new narrative device of the Multiverse that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is embracing and the incredible box office grosses of No Way Home might push Andrew Garfield back into the fold.

Andrew Garfield never inspired the same kind of beloved fandom in the role that Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland both have. He never got the chance to make the Amazing Spider-Man 3 film that presumably would have featured the heavily-accented Paul Giamatti as the Rhino. But 2021 has been kinder to Andrew Garfield, after starring as Rent creator Jonathan Larson in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tick, Tick…Boom! to widespread praise (per Collider), and now redeeming his version of Spider-Man. No Way Home seems to have taken the Amazing Spider-Man films’ reputation into account, introducing Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker as a disillusioned variant of the hero who needs to find his inner sense of self-worth. It’ll be interesting to see if this was his final run as Spider-Man or if his return will be announced in the years to come.
