According to SuperData, Among Us is now the most popular game ever. “Most popular” was determined by monthly players. Amid those monthly players is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a US representative from New York often known as AOC. It may come as no surprise to AOC’s social media following that she’s been playing the most popular game ever, since she hasn’t been shy about sharing her gaming habits, especially in 2020.
Back in July, she was quarantining while playing League of Legends, a multiplayer game first released in 2009. While many recent posts about the game are simply gamers asking if it’s still active, in 2020 there is still plenty happening there, as evidenced by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s activities. A lot of older games have made strong comebacks on the market in 2020. Among Us was actually released in 2018, but only became the hit it is now this year.
Among Us is a party game often compared to Mafia or Werewolf. Your party has four to ten players. One (or possibly two) of the players is the imposter. The imposter’s job is to not get caught while they run around secretly killing their crewmates. Not only do we know that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez enjoys playing Among Us, but we’ve also seen her do it. And we’ve seen her play the imposter.
In October 2020, AOC went live on Twitch to play Among Us while over 439,000 concurrent viewers watched. Overall, 5.2 million viewers checked in during her marathon session. For comparison, this is the third most-watched Twitch stream of all time. The record for most concurrent viewers on Twitch is 628,000. Also of note, these aren’t normal numbers for a politician’s Twitch stream. Donald Trump has used Twitch for campaign events, peaking at 6,000 concurrent viewers. Joe Biden has done similar to an audience of 17,000.

Why is Among Us so popular? Will it continue to grow? Become one of the best games of all time? Among Us was first released prior to 2020, when lockdowns weren’t yet predicted, but it was well-suited to become a hit this year.
For one thing, it’s fun watching someone like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez play it. Influencers on social media have been picking it up and streaming it a fair amount. It’s priced low on Steam, making it an easy game to pick up and try with your friends. And that’s the real thing of it: it’s a very fun social game in a year where socially-distanced fun is needed. It has enough gameplay for experienced gamers to have a good time while being easily accessible for those who don’t play much. Among Us may not be the best game of all time, but it was solidly made for these times.
