Back in October of last year, Alec Baldwin was involved in a fatal shooting on the set of a western film he was starring in called, Rust. As a result of that shooting, a cinematographer by the name of Halyna Hutchins lost her life when a prop gun was discharged by Baldwin, killing Halyna and injuring the director, Joel Souza. For the first time since the tragedy occurred, Halyna Hutchins’s husband has spoken out about the incident which claimed the life of his wife. Matt Hutchins sat down with Today’s Hoda Kotb, which is set to air today, to give his opinion on the matter. Matt did not mince words when it came to how he felt about who he blamed and who should be held responsible for his wife’s tragic death.
Throughout the time since this tragedy took place, the focus has all been about Alec Baldwin and his guilt or innocence in the matter of Halyna losing her life. When asked if Matt had seen the interview between Baldwin and Good Morning America’s George Stephanopoulos, Matt said that he had seen it and it made him “so angry,” Matt claimed, “I was just so angry to see him talk about her death so publicly, in such a detailed way and then to not accept any responsibility after having just described killing her.” Baldwin said during the interview with Stephanopoulos that he was told he was given a “cold” gun, which is a gun that couldn’t fire, but when he pulled back the hammer on the gun, it went off. He reiterated “I never pulled the trigger.”
Matt Hutchins went further into details about how he felt in regard to the tearful interview that Alec Baldwin gave. According to Matt, “Hearing him blame Halyna in the interview and shift responsibility to others and seeing him cry about it, I felt like are we supposed to feel bad about you, Mr. Baldwin?.” Matt didn’t just blame Baldwin for Halyna’s death, but he claimed that there were several industry standards not met on set that caused this tragedy. Matt Hutchins told Hoda Kotb, “But gun safety was not the only problem on that set. There were a number of industry standards that were not practiced and there’s multiple responsible parties.”
The death of Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust has caused a ripple effect for those who were a part of this film. A short time after her death, a light operator had opened a lawsuit against Alec Baldwin and Rust LLC, detailing some of the unsafe practices that were happening during the film’s production. Now it has been stated that Matt Hutchins has also opened a lawsuit on behalf of himself and his son, naming Baldwin and other companies involved with the film for negligent, intentional, willful, or reckless misconduct resulting in wrongful death and loss of consortium.
There are likely to be parties responsible for the tragic death of Halyna Hutchins, and whether or not that involves Alec Baldwin, has yet to be confirmed. However, the parties and companies involved in Rust have to come forward and agree to a consensus on what happened or allow the authorities to finish their investigation in the matter, so that they may reveal their official judgment. This tragic shooting should have been prevented, considering there are tons of safety officials on the set of every film, and the details about what truly happened might be revealed soon by way of the official investigation. Halyna lost her life and that is awful no matter what happens in this investigation. Rest in peace, Halyna Hutchins.
