Fans of the Al Pacino series Hunters will be disappointed to hear that the Amazon Prime series is ending after only two seasons, according to MovieWeb.com. The series, which stars The Godfather actor, was renewed for a second season back in 2020, but it wasn’t announced until now that there will be no Season 3.

Al Pacino stars in Hunters alongside a strong cast featuring Logan Lerman (The Perks of Being a Wallflower), Jerrika Hinton (Grey’s Anatomy), and Josh Radnor How I Met Your Mother). Kate Mulvany, Tiffany Boone, Greg Austin, Louis Ozawa, Carol Kane, Saul Rubinek, Dylan Baker, and Lena Olin also fill in the talented ensemble cast.

Hunters is a conspiracy crime drama that takes place in the 1970s. It follows Al Pacino as part of a secret group of Nazi Hunters fighting a covert war against Nazis-in-hiding who are trying to create the Fourth Reich. The series was created by David Weil and streams on Prime Video.

The first season was released in February 2020 and met mixed reviews from its audience. Taking on such sensitive subject matter does not come without its risks, and series creator David Weil has embraced the controversy. “It’s designed to be disruptive,” Weil told Entertainment Weekly in an interview, explaining that his show was meant to create conversation and spread awareness.

Overall, the series has received praise for its theme, messages, and performances by the ensemble cast. It has also been criticized for its inconsistent tone and historical inaccuracies. One of the biggest criticisms is the underdevelopment of the heroes; one of the pitfalls of having such a large ensemble cast.

The series was renewed for a season two the summer after the first season’s initial release, though it was slow work to complete the second season, and the series has been canceled before season two has even begun streaming.

According to Weil, Al Pacino’s Hunters season two will feature the same ruthless, messy, and passionate storytelling that season one has been praised and criticized for. It will also continue taking big risks. One of those risks includes adding Adolf Hitler (who will be played by Udo Kier) to the plot.

Weil explained that growing up as a Jewish kid in New York, he had always felt angry that Hitler got away with his crimes. In the end, Hitler chose how his life ended, and to Weil this meant he was never brought to justice. Weil promises that including Hitler in Season 2 offers a gratifying deliverance to the story, saying that he would only ever include the character if he was able to serve “satisfying” justice.

It is unclear if Weil knew that his show would be canceled before completing work on the second season. Hopefully, both Al Pacino and Hunters fans alike are satisfied with the series ending, and the show does wrap up neatly, unlike the fate of so many other canceled projects.

Season two of Hunters will be available for streaming on Prime Video on January 13, 2023.
