Part of acting is pretending to be someone else, but when characters are falling in love, it can be hard to separate fiction from reality. Most recently, rumors have been swirling that Sydney Sweeney and Glenn Powell, working on a romantic comedy together, were spotted having a clandestine rendezvous at a hotel. If it’s true, then the pair wouldn’t be the first to meet and fall in love on a film set, as these 10 other couples also met while working and took the feelings from the set back home after work.

10. Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth – The Last Song

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth met while filming The Last Song, a romantic coming-of-age film that was panned by critics but still managed nearly $90 million at the box office. More importantly, the two young leads fell in love off-camera, starting a tabloid-infused romance that lasted through multiple engagements, a low-key wedding, and ended in divorce a decade after their first meeting. The on-again, off-again relationship always gave the impression that it was never going to end well, but fans of Cyrus were hopeful, but as we’ll soon see, on-set romance almost never ends happily.

9. Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson – Twilight

Twilight Eclipse Proposal

The two star-crossed lovers in Twilight end up together, but the actors behind the fan-favorite characters, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, ended their short relationship in scandal. When the stars announced they were an item away from the set, fans swooned and could not be happier that Bella and Edward really did fall in love. Alas, after Stweart cheated on Pattinson with Rupert Sanders, the director of Snow White and The Huntsman, the tabloids detected blood in the water, and a few months later, the relationship was over.

Today, in interviews, Stewart has often mentioned that she was “young and stupid” when falling in love with her co-star. The pair are amicable, but it’s clear that Bella and Edward are never, ever getting back together.

8. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner – Daredevil

Daredevil was a disaster for Ben Affleck, but at least he found his wife, Jennifer Garner, while filming the box office flop. The pair played lovers on-screen and took that chemistry off-screen for a 15-year relationship. Though, if you caught a glimpse of the tabloid headlines at the supermarket checkout line, you know how badly the marriage ended following Affleck’s third stint in rehab.

Though they separated in 2015 and divorced in 2018, the pair remain friends and co-parent together, even going out with Ben Affleck’s new wife, Jennifer Lopez, to Trick-or-Treat as a blended family.

7. Johnny Depp and Amber Heard – The Rum Diary

One of Hollywood’s most infamous couples met while filming The Rum Diary, Johnny Depp‘s second adaptation of a Hunter S. Thompson novel, and this one went gonzo. Amber Heard and Depp fell madly in love, getting married five years after their meeting, but a few months later, all of that love fell away. Heard filed for divorce, setting off a chain of lawsuits and accusations that remained tied up in court until 2022, making this one of the worst pairings on the list.

More people watched the courtroom proceedings than the film that brought them together since The Rum Diary earned only $30 million compared to its budget of $45 million.

6. Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively – Green Lantern

There’s something about disappointing movies that must be romantic, which would explain why so many couples, like Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, fell in love on gigantic flops like Green Lantern. Unlike Affleck and Garner or Heard and Depp, the long-married pair have been together for 12 years, with five children and two Deadpool movies. Though they met while on the set of a DC film, neither has returned to that side of the superhero aisle, and in fact, they haven’t worked together on a film since.

The pair are often considered the best Hollywood couple to follow on social media. Each good-naturedly makes fun of the other, which might be the secret to a successful, long-running celebrity relationship.

5. Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield – Amazing Spider-Man 2

The sun rises in the east, water is wet, and anyone that plays Peter Parker will fall in love with his co-star. Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst dated, Tom Holland and Zendaya are still together, and Andrew Garfield dated Emma Stone. Though Stone was playing Gwen Stacy instead of Mary-Jane, the end result was the same, with a relationship lasting through both The Amazing Spider-Man films before it fizzled out.

Demonstrating a maturity and grace that certain couples on this list most definitely never had, Garfield and Stone went their separate ways over dealing with the pressures of a long-distance relationship due to the heavy workloads undertaken by both stars. Still friends to this day, Garfield admitted he lied to Stone about being involved in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is the type of prank most of us can only dream about pulling on our friends.

4. Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan – Step Up

Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan bonded on the set of Step Up over their love of dance, leading to an almost decade-long marriage, from 2009 to 2018, with one child. The pair were wildly in love after filming the movie together, opting to go back to Los Angeles and immediately start living together, though they ended as friends, admitting that work and distance took their toll on the relationship. Tatum is now dating Zoe Kravitz, while Dewan married Steve Kazee, with a recent sighting in April 2023 of the pair together, with their daughter, on a joint shopping trip.

3. Kit Harington and Rose Leslie – Game of Thrones

Jon Snow may “know nothing,” but Kit Harington knew, while filming Game of Thrones in Iceland, that he was falling madly in love with his co-star, Rose Leslie. After spending years playing an on-screen couple, the pair tied the knot in 2018, welcoming a son three years later, and today is currently expecting a second child. Harington has admitted that even though his role as Jon Snow catapulted him to stardom, meeting Leslie was the most important part of filming the series.

Almost every relationship on the show ended horribly, including Harington and Leslie’s tragic on-screen love, but the pair have managed to make it through to the other side, still together and for all outward appearances, going stronger than ever.

2. Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling – The Place Beyond The Pines

Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling keep the list going with couples that have been together for over a decade and still going strong. The pair met while filming The Place Beyond The Pines, and have been tight-lipped about their relationship ever since. It’s clear that the two are in love, raising two children together, and while recently they’ve opened up a little more, the pair is in one of the most private celebrity relationships in history.

Unusually for a Hollywood couple, the pair won’t even pose on the red carpet together, with Mendes only ever sharing photos online that have already been circulating in the trades. Whatever they are doing, it’s working.

1. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt – Mr And Mrs Smith

Angelina Jolie Brad Pitt

The biggest celebrity couple of this century, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, met while filming Mr. and Mrs. Smith, but as Pitt was married to Jennifer Aniston at the time, there was no romance and instead just a friendship. Two years later, in 2005, the pair were spotted together for the first time, with Pitt adopting Jolie’s child in 2006. For the next decade, the pair were a globe-setting power couple that seemed to be out to save the world, marrying in 2014, and then divorcing just a few years later in 2018.

In the last two years, the flaming wreckage of the couple’s marriage was brought into the public eye again, with lawsuits flying from both sides alleging abuse, or conspiracy, resulting in Pitt losing his joint custody of Jolie’s children. A 2016 plane incident, which was investigated by the FBI following reports that Pitt was getting physical with his wife and children, was brought to light after being buried for years. With lawsuits still working their way through the court system, Hollywood’s most famous couple will be fighting over the failed relationship for many years to come.
