Guns Akimbo – March 5, 2020

Daniel Radcliffe's action movie

Hogwarts is long gone. Daniel Radcliffe is all grown up and suddenly he’s doing a totally bonkers action movie. The plot of Guns Akimbo involves Radcliffe’s character literally having guns bolted to his hands. He’s then forced to participate in a city-wide game of death in which a gang called SKIZM forces contestants to battle to the death.

The movie’s first trailer make it look like something you’d expect from Jason Statham, not Daniel Radcliffe. It’s nuts. Watch the first trailer for Guns Akimbo below…

Spenser Confidential – March 6, 2020

action movie poster

Mark Wahlberg has teamed up with director Peter Berg for this action movie about an ex-cop named Spenser, just getting out of prison. His ex-mentor talks him into helping a promising young boxer named Hawk and along the way they get involved in trying to take down the corrupt cops who framed him in the first place.

Here’s the first trailer for Spenser Confidential

If you watched the trailer and though “hey this seems a lot like the 80s TV show Spencer For Hire” then you know your 80s TV shows. Both this movie and that old TV show were inspired by the same book, Robert B.Parker’s Wonderland by author Ace Atkins.

Spenser Confidential will skip theaters and debut directly on Netflix March 6, 2020.

What at first seems simple becomes a battle of wits between the hardened agent and the nine-year-old girl in this action movie.

Mulan – March 27, 2020

Family action movie Mulan

Disney is back with another live-action movie remake of an animated favorite. This Mulan, though, follows more the Chinese story “The Ballad of Mulan” rather than their own animated classic.

The Emperor of China decrees that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Chinese Army to fight the Huns. But Mulan’s father, the only male in the family, is ailing, so she disguises herself as a man to take his place. The question concerning this version is how much of the animated film will be kept in this live-action version.

Missing Mushu

We do know that neither the magical dragon Mushu (voiced by Eddie Murphy in the Disney animated movie) nor any of the songs from the animated movie will be a part of this version of Mulan. In fact there won’t be any singing or any magic at all. When asked why, the live-action Mulan’s director had this to say…

I mean, back to the realism question – we don’t tend to break into song when we go to war. Not that I’m saying anything against the animation. The songs are brilliant, and if I could squeeze them in there, I would have. But we do honor the music from the animation in a very significant way.

No Time to Die – April 10, 2020

James Bond’s world of fantastic gadgets and submarine cars has always been as much science fiction as it is a grounded spy-thriller, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. 007 will return in 2020 to deliver more high-tech thrills in what may be Daniel Craig’s last outing as Bond in No Time To Die.

This final Craig-led installment finds 007 having left active service and living in Jamaica. His buddy and CIA operative Felix Leiter asks Bond for his help searching for a missing scientist. It soon becomes apparent the scientist was abducted, forcing 007 to confront an enemy and danger the world has never seen. Will this truly be Craig’s final 007 film?

The Next James Bond

If this is Daniel Craig’s last James Bond movie, don’t expect him to be replaced by a woman in future films. Though that’s been a trend recently in Hollywood, long-time James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli says that will never happen with James Bond. She explains…

“He can be of any color, but he is male. I believe we should be creating new characters for women – strong female characters. I’m not particularly interested in taking a male character and having a woman play it. I think women are far more interesting than that.”

Fast & Furious 9 – May 22, 2020

video game action movie

The story supposedly follows young Drake as he meets up with Sully and the two become partners in their globe-trotting treasure hunting adventures.

The A-Team – TBA

According to We Got This Covered, Disney is developing a new A-Team movie. The franchise was acquired by the company in their buyout of Fox’s library and they’re now working on developing a new film.

The A-Team was turned into a movie once, back in 2010, but that movie was more of a reboot of the TV show than a sequel. Word is that this version will actually be a sequel to the television show, existing in the same universe as the beloved characters we know. That also leaves room for Mr. T to appear in a cameo, maybe as a grizzled elderly veteran coaching up the new kids.

Currently rumor has Disney considering Will Smith and Guardians of the Galaxy’s Dave Bautista to star in their new A-Team action movie. If they can’t get them, Disney is eager to snare some kind of big name talent to topline the film, so expect this to end up starring someone equally noteworthy.

Enemy Of The State 2 – TBA

The original Enemy of the State was released in 1998, one year after Men in Black, during the period in Will Smith’s career where he’d just begun establishing himself as a huge box office draw. Back then he was as known for the music videos he’d release with the movies he starred in, as much as the movies themselves.

But Enemy of the State was different. A taut, well-crafted action movie which let Will Smith show off his acting ability by playing off one of the greatest actors of all time in Gene Hackman. It opened at $20 million, earning over $100 million during its run, and Hollywood viewed it as a modest hit. Now, more than twenty years later, it’s coming back.

We Got This Covered says a sequel is in the works with Will Smith being targeted to return and star as Robert Clayton Dean. Since the events of the first movie he now works for the government, and is sent to track down a young man accused of a cyber crime. When Dean discovers his target is innocent, he sets out to try and help him clear his name. It sounds a lot like Smith is taking on the Gene Hackman role from the first movie, with the newcomer as the new protagonist.

The themes of the original Enemy of the State are more relevant than ever. It focused on ideas of government corruption and the use of facial recognition and other technology to spy on citizens. At the time a lot of it seemed like science fiction, but now that science fiction is our reality.

National Treasure 3

Nic Cage Action Movie Sequel

Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer are working on a third movie in the National Treasure franchise. Chris Bremner, who most recently wrote Bad Boys For Life, has been hired to write the action movie’s script.

No word yet on whether Nicholas Cage will return, but given that his recent track record indicates he’ll do almost anything for money, it seems likely. Also no word yet on whether director John Turtletaub will be back, but in 2018 he told /Film that if National Treasure 3 happened “I would make it tomorrow.”

The second and last entry in the series, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, was released way back in 2007. It grossed $457 million worldwide and given that box office success it’s surprising that it’s taken Disney this long to make National Treasure 3 happen.

Bad Boys 4

The third action movie entry in the Bad Boys series earned solid critical reviews and jumped off to a solid start at the box office with a $6.36 million opening night. Now we’re getting another one. Bad Boys 4 is being worked on.

Chris Bremner, who wrote Bad Boys For Life (aka Bad Boys 3), has been hired by Sony to write Bad Boys 4. THR says Sony’s plan is to have less lag time between Bad Boys For Life and the release of Bad Boys 4, than there was between Bad Boys 2 and 3. That means the movie is being fast-tracked and they’ll be pushing hard to get it out as soon as possible.

Both Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are expected to return for Bad Boys 4. Of course, there is no movie without the two of them, so if one of them suddenly decides not to be involved the whole project will die on the vine. But for now, it looks like they’re Bad Boys for life.
