Sofia Vergara went full 1920s flapper for a Great Gatsby themed party.

Back before he unleashed his killer Elvis movie on us, director Baz Luhrman brought us a killer adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel The Great Gatsby starring Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio. That movie came out in 2013 and led to an unexpected side effect: more and more people began throwing “Gatsby parties” in which guests are encouraged to dress for the Roaring ‘20s (the 1920s, that is). Modern Family star Sofia Vergara is getting in on the fun by dressing up for a “Great Gatsby night,” and her flapper costume is sure to leave fans panting for more pictures.

Younger readers (or readers who never had to read much Fitzgerald in their old English classes) may have some big questions now, such as what the hell a flapper is and why Sofia Vergara is dressing like one. It all started with Prohibition, in which American politicians foolishly made it illegal to buy and sell alcohol. Quicker than you can say, “capitalism,” people began setting up illegal “speakeasies” where young men and women could gather to do the best kind of partying: forbidden partying.

Speaking of “forbidden,” this was the same time period that women were expected to act and dress as meek and subservient to men and to elders, but these ideas didn’t exactly fly with younger women. Empowered by the ability to drive anywhere, thanks to Henry Ford making cars commonplace, young women began driving into major cities, meeting up with each other for everything from impromptu hangs to raging parties. These free-spirited women became known as “flappers,” and after they ditched the modest clothes their parents bought them in favor of skimpier clothing, they birthed an entire flapper fashion movement that Sofia Vergara is clearly a big fan of.

Of course, you probably didn’t need the history lesson to understand that Sofia Vergara looks smoking hot in her own homage to flapper culture. The dress is tight and flashy, accentuating all of her best features (always a difficult challenge when someone has as many beautiful features as Vergara). But the standout elements are her oversized earrings (in Gatsby-level excess, each one is nine diamond shapes filled with actual diamonds) and the tiara that makes her look as much like a princess as she looks like a flapper.

While we doubt Sofia Vergara was thinking about this when dressing for the party, there are some interesting connections between her outfit and her upcoming television miniseries, Griselda. For example, Al Capone rose to power and prominence during Prohibition, proving there was plenty of money to be made by criminals willing to provide ordinary people with the vices the government is trying to take away. In her upcoming show, Vergara portrays real-life drug lord Griselda Blanco, who used some of the basic lessons of Capone to create one of the most powerful (and most profitable) cocaine cartels in all of American history…although we have a feeling the real-life Griselda never wore a dress quite like Vergara is rocking in this pic.
