Leonardo DiCaprio is an accomplished actor, having starred in massive hits like Titanic, Wolf of Wall Street, and The Beach, but he’s also become a source of controversy in recent years. While he’s always been known for dating models, DiCaprio’s choice in girlfriends has started getting notice because as he’s getting older, his girlfriends remain the same age. After news broke that his latest girlfriend is 19, The Washington State Department of Natural Resources joined in on the social media dunking with a tweet of their own.

This tweet is, in the common parlance of social media, a burn. Leonardo DiCaprio’s most recent girlfriend is, allegedly, Eden Polani, a model born in 2004. That’s after the star was in Titanic, Gangs of New York, Catch Me If You Can, and Critters 3. To put this in perspective, DiCaprio is currently 48, which means he was nearly 30 when his current girlfriend was born.

While everyone is allowed to love whomever it is that they want, and to Leonardo DiCaprio’s credit he hasn’t been the target of any sexual harassment lawsuits, people on social media love mocking the star for his predictable habit. Partly that’s because DiCaprio is a private individual, that also happens to be rich and wildly successful, so of course he’s going to get some barbs tossed in his direction.

Some people have made comments that tweets like this from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources come close to making a joke out of statutory rape. However, again, no one has ever accused Leonardo DiCaprio of committing a crime, he just prefers dating young models. If he doesn’t want to date anyone that can remember when 9/11 happened, that’s his choice.

Hollywood celebrities dating younger women has been a common occurrence since Hollywood was founded. Leonardo DiCaprio is in the same company as Michael Douglas is 25 years older than his long-time wife Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Zach Braff and Florence Pugh had a difference of 21 years. One of the greatest comedians of all time, Eddie Murphy, has dated women younger than him by 20 years (multiple times) and 23 years younger.

Leonardo DiCaprio still has awhile to go before he catches up to the age gaps between Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Aimee Preston, 40 years younger than the now-embattled singer, and of course, Hugh Hefner. The founder of Playboy was famous for dating multiple women that could be his grandkids, with a gap of almost 60 years between himself and Anna Sophia Berglund.

Unlike those two, Leonardo DiCaprio has stayed out of legal trouble, but provided no one is making harmful statements about him the vox populi are allowed to say what they want about his relationships. It’s sadly the price of fame in modern society but the Once Upon A Time In Hollywood star handles it well. Provided he doesn’t try to take his new girlfriend drinking for the next two years, he should be in good shape.

If Leonardo DiCaprio chooses to live life based off of the famous quote from Matthew McConaughey‘s stoner in Dazed and Confused, “That’s what I love about these high school girls, man. I get older, they stay the same age.” Then that is his own choice and he’s allowed to make it, though he can’t let his girlfriends rent a car or book a hotel, he can still date anyone he chooses.
