Katie Cassidy

She is perhaps best known as Laurel Lance aka Black Canary aka Black Siren on the CW’s hit show Arrow. But with that show coming to an end a couple of years back, where did that leave Katie Cassidy? Would there have been a chance for fans to perhaps see more of Black Canary in the near future? Cassidy was certainly hoping so. And, at one point, she had plans to make it happen.

Coming up, Katie Cassidy is set to have a role in the movie Fallout which will also star Kate Bosworth and Tyrese Gibson. In the movie, six people are trapped in a fallout shelter with air (along with, presumably, trust and patience) starting to run out. That is due out sometime in 2023.

And she is a frequent poster on Instagram, where she has 2.7 million followers. Her feed is family life, exercise, and other odds and ends in the goings-on of a celebrity.

SHE IS THE DAUGHTER OF DAVID CASSIDY

Katie Cassidy is the daughter of former teen heartthrob David Cassidy of The Partridge Family fame. David Cassidy passed away in late 2017 and the relationship between father and daughter was never truly a father/daughter relationship.

According to David, before he passed, he told People in an interview, “I wasn’t her father. I was her biological father but I didn’t raise her,” Cassidy said. “She has a completely different life.”

But that didn’t mean he didn’t follow her career. “I’m proud of her,” adds Cassidy. “She’s very talented. It’s hard for me to even accept how old she is now, like 30.”

For Katie’s part, when word got to her that her “father’s” health was deteriorating (he died of organ failure from complications from dementia), she immediately went to his side at the hospital. Even when David put in his will, specifically removing Katie by name, from it, she was there. His will, in part, read: “It is my specific intent not to provide any benefits hereunder to Katherine Evelyn Cassidy and/or any descendant of Katherine Evelyn Cassidy.” How does one deal with that? With grace.

Katie Cassidy’s tweet on the death of her father read, “Words can’t express the solace our family’s received from all the love & support during this trying time,” she wrote. “My father’s last words were ‘So much wasted time.’ This will be a daily reminder for me to share my gratitude with those I love as to never waste another minute… Thank you.”

Katie Cassidy managed kind words for a man who battled demons his entire life, pretty much writing off, and out, his biological daughter, only to have her remain at his side as he slowly died. It takes a big person to overlook that troubled past, but Katie Cassidy did just that with her famous dad.

KATIE CASSIDY HAD SMALLER ROLES TO START

Katie Cassidy made her debut on the TV series The Division. It was a one-episode deal that unfortunately didn’t amount to much.

It took the young actress two more years before she got another crack at TV, but she did in an episode of Listen Up. This is when things began to open up for Cassidy.

Katie then came aboard the series 7^th Heaven in a recurring role and also found herself on the series Sex, Love & Secrets. Things were starting to move for her. It was around this time that Katie Cassidy began to make a name for herself, a specific name at that.

KATIE CASSIDY WAS A SCREAM QUEEN EARLY IN HER CAREER

In 2006, Katie Cassidy began her first foray into the horror genre. It came with the remake of When A Stranger Calls, the first being the 1979 classic starring Carol Kane. You know the one, “Have you checked the children?” Cassidy didn’t get the lead role as Jill Johnson (that went to Camilla Belle) but she did come aboard as Johnson’s best friend Tiffany, who meets a very unfortunate end.

Not only was When A Stranger Calls Katie Cassidy’s first jump into horror, but it would also be her first feature film. Her second, also a horror flick, came shortly thereafter.

Black Christmas was Katie Cassidy’s second horror film in less than one year. It would also be her second remake of a classic horror film. This one was a remake of the 1974 cult classic Black Christmas, which starred back then Olivia Hussey (Romeo & Juliet), Keir Dullea (2001: A Space Odyssey, Romeo & Juliet), Margot Kidder (Superman, The Amityville Horror), and John Saxon (Enter the Dragon). Sadly, as with the many remakes, this one fell flat, taking what made the original so creepy and compelling by giving it the unnecessary backstory. Regardless, Katie Cassidy was beginning to make a horror name for herself.

To further cement herself as an up-and-coming scream queen, Katie Cassidy stepped on over to the popular series Supernatural in a recurring role. She then went on to star in the vastly underrated but highly effective TV mini-series event, Harper’s Island, which was told over 13 episodes and follows friends and family as they gather at the island for a wedding. One by one, though, they begin to die.

But Katie Cassidy didn’t stop there. As a veteran of the horror remake, she had no problem taking on another one; this time it involved one of horror’s most iconic characters, Freddy Krueger. In this remake of A Nightmare On Elm Street, Cassidy took on the role of Kris Fowles and if you know your Elm Street history, you know that she does not last long. Seems Cassidy doesn’t mind being offed.

After A Nightmare on Elm Street, Katie Cassidy would go on to star in thrillers like Kill For Me, The Scribbler, and Wolves at the Door. In the process, she cemented her place in scream queen history. ET ranked their top 40 scream queens and at 19, Cassidy falls in between Drew Barrymore at 20 and Adrienne Barbeau at number 18. In case you were wondering, Jamie Lee Curtis took home the top spot.

SHE LANDED THE ROLE OF LAUREL LANCE IN THE ARROWVERSE

Katie Cassidy left the horror realm and moved on to other things. She had a recurring role on Melrose Place and then one on the popular Gossip Girls. It was soon after Gossip Girls that she pulled down her most iconic role to date as Laurel Lance in the series Arrow.

Katie said she knew the series was going to be a hit after she read the pilot episode and then had a meeting with the producers Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, and David Nutter. “I’m all for strong women having their own story and they pitched it to me. I remember calling my agent after reading the pilot and said, ‘This is going to be a hit. I don’t want to read any other scripts. I have to play this role. I was born to play this role. This is me,'” she told EOnline. And play that role she did.

Katie Cassidy’s character eventually met her demise only to come back bigger and better than ever. Her role as Lance crossed over to The Flash and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow as well as the animated series Vixens and the animated movie Vixens: The Movie.

KATIE CASSIDY WANTED TO RETURN TO THE ROLE OF BLACK CANARY

Arrow ended in 2020 which means Katie Cassidy was out of a job. So what was next for her? At first, there wasn’t anything specific lined up.

Rumor had it that Katie Cassidy’s Laurel Lance would make another appearance, this time in what possibly will be titled Green Arrow and the Canaries for the CW. The network didn’t give the show a green light yet, but the actress remained hopeful. “I’m a very positive person, so I feel confident that we’ll go [to series],” she told TVLine.
