They say laughter is the best medicine, but recently, famous comedian Jay Leno discovered that laughter is no substitute for a good plastic surgeon. Recently, Leno was working on one of his cars (he has a famous and extensive car collection) when the vehicle splashed gasoline onto his face. The gasoline ignited and seriously injured Leno, but he recently spoke to Kelly Clarkson and showed everyone his “brand new face.”

To his credit, Jay Leno understood that fans (both in the audience and watching at home) wouldn’t be able to appreciate the rest of his interview with Clarkson until he addressed the accident. The incident with the gasoline igniting occurred back in November, and Leno hadn’t made many media appearances outside of social media (where he took the time to make a poor joke about Jeremy Renner’s own accident, prompting a serious backlash from Marvel Cinematic Universe fans). Some fans were beginning to worry that Leno might have permanent scarring and turn into a recluse (especially after he got into an unrelated motorcycle accident), but here he is showing off a face that you would never guess had been involved in such a scary accident.

So, after exchanging pleasantries about their difficulty in meeting together (Kelly Clarkson contracted COVID before one planned interview, and then Jay Leno’s face caught on fire before the next planned interview), the comedian launched directly into talking about the accident and his new face. But Leno couldn’t resist throwing the occasional joke in there, going so far as to say that the gasoline ignited because he was “eating a flaming hot Dorito.” As usual, Leno’s humor is so bad that you might start longing for your own freak car accident, but it is unintentionally funny to ponder the poor Doritos PR guy quietly screaming in his corner office after he hears this joke.

The other big Jay Leno joke we get in this clip involves him joking about the fact that thanks to his recent plastic surgery, he’s “the new face of comedy” for the second time (the first time being when he rose to fame back in the 1980s). It’s another mild joke, and it followed a milder bit where the comedian joked with his host that it looked like his face should have a zipper that allows it to more easily come off. Leno doesn’t always deal in self-deprecating humor, so it was morbidly amusing to imagine Jay Leno putting on his face the way an actor in a horror movie might put on a frightening appliance before the big climax, especially after he pointed out that his left ear is brand new (maybe he can swap weird ear stories with Mark Hamill).

While Jay Leno didn’t talk about it much with Kelly Clarkson, it looks like he treated the unexpected car accident as a chance to reinvent himself. Last year, CNBC canceled Jay Leno’s Garage, which ended a business relationship between the two that lasted over 30 years. It would be many months later that Leno suffered his nasty accident, but he was actually performing stand-up comedy only two weeks later, which shows one important thing: the actor’s love of comedy and commitment to performing for fans is just as resilient as his famous face.
