In a recent interview, Snatched actress Goldie Hawn said that she believes the Academy Awards have become too political and not as elegant as they used to be.

The Academy Awards are no stranger to controversy and criticism, and now Goldie Hawn is the latest to take shots at the long-running award ceremony. In Hawn’s recent interview with Variety, the actress stated she’s “missing reverence” in the ceremony and that “things have become politicized.” While the Oscars have (rightly) received a lot of flack for a lack of diversity, Hawn’s main criticism is that the Oscars aren’t quite as “elegant” as they used to be.

Of course, Goldie Hawn is no stranger to the Academy Awards, as she has been nominated for two Oscars throughout her career. One for Best Actress in Private Benjamin and another for Best Supporting Actress in Cactus Flower, which she won. Of course, her Oscar win was in 1970, and her last nomination was in 1981, so obviously, the culture has changed quite a bit since then.

Interestingly, Goldie Hawn actually hadn’t even watched the ceremony where she won her Oscar until at a party earlier this year. Hawn was not in attendance, and Raquel Welch accepted the award on her behalf. The presenter of the award was Fred Astaire.

In her interview, Goldie Hawn also touches on the thorny subject of cancel culture, which is something that older actors don’t tend to have very nuanced opinions on. Hawn’s arguments are the old standbys such as “comedians are afraid to tell certain jokes the way they used to” and “they’re canceling books — classic books that no one can read.” So, at least in that respect, she’s not really bringing anything original to the conversation.

Goldie Hawn also talked about the infamous 2022 Oscar slap, where Will Smith slapped Chris Rock in an unscripted moment over a joke Rock made about Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair. Chris Rock himself finally touched on the event in a recent comedy special. As for Hawn, she condemned Smith’s actions while also praising Rock’s composure.

While Goldie Hawn has quite a few thoughts about her perceived politicization of the Academy Awards, she is not up for any nominations this year. It is shaping up to be an interesting Academy Awards, with plenty of stars up for their first big awards and a crowded Best Picture category that’s mixed with indie darlings and some of the biggest blockbusters of all time. Right now, Everything Everywhere All at Once is favored to win the night’s big award.

It’s actually been a while since we’ve seen Goldie Hawn in any movies. Her most recent film was when she reprised the role of Mrs. Claus in The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two after playing the role in The Christmas Chronicles in 2018. Before that, she appeared in the comedy Snatched alongside Amy Schumer in 2017.

Goldie Hawn does have one movie listed on her upcoming projects titled A Childhood History Plan, which co-stars Bette Midler and Diane Keaton. The film follows three women who are forced to spend Christmas together after the man they were all once married to dies. However, the last update of this film was in 2020, when they were planning on starting production.

It seems like Goldie Hawn’s movie is in a bit of development limbo and probably hit a snag due to the pandemic. With no updates since 2020, it seems like there’s a chance the film won’t get made at all. In the meantime, you can catch this year’s Academy Awards this Sunday.
